16-year-old fatally stabbed in Montpellier brawl, 17-year-old surrenders to police
A 16-year-old adolescent died after being stabbed during a brawl involving at least seven people in Montpellier on the evening of 9 August 2026. A 17-year-old turned himself in the next morning, identifying himself as the attacker.
The incident
A 16-year-old adolescent was killed in a brawl on the evening of Sunday 9 August 2026 in Montpellier, in southern France. The fight broke out around 23:00 to 23:20 on allée Alberto Giacometti, near the parc Georges Charpak and the Odysseum district, in the Port-Marianne area southeast of the city. According to a police source cited by AFP, the victim received two knife wounds to the thorax, while BFMTV reported a single stab wound to the thorax. At least seven people were involved in the altercation. National police intervened at the scene and found the victim in cardiac arrest, being treated by a neighbor who was a doctor.
The victim was transported by SAMU to the CHRU hospital with a life-threatening prognosis. Despite resuscitation efforts by emergency services, he died around 2:00 AM.

Arrests and custody
Three individuals were placed in custody in connection with the case. Two people aged 18 and 19, described by ICI Hérault as friends of the victim and belonging to his group, were detained during the night. On the morning of Monday 10 August, a 17-year-old minor voluntarily presented himself at the Montpellier police station, identifying himself as the perpetrator of the knife blows. He was immediately placed in custody, which was still ongoing as of Monday morning. The Montpellier prosecutor's office confirmed these details to multiple outlets including franceinfo and Le Figaro.
Fugitives and open questions
The perpetrators of the fatal stabbing fled the scene on scooters (trottinettes), according to BFMTV. Other individuals involved in the brawl are actively being sought by police. The motive for the fight remains unknown, according to a source close to the investigation cited by BFMTV.
Investigation proceedings
The investigation, opened as a flagrant offence case, has been assigned to the local judicial police service of Montpellier. The prosecutor's office stated that witness hearings and technical investigations will need to establish the causes and circumstances of the death. An autopsy of the victim was ordered by the prosecutor's office and will be carried out by the Montpellier forensic medicine service.
