17-year-old dies and one person missing after drowning incident at Olimp beach in Romania
A 17-year-old boy was pulled dead from the sea at the Olimp resort on Romania's Black Sea coast on Sunday, 16 August, while another person from the same group remains missing as divers continue the search.
Incident at Olimp
Three young people entered the sea on Sunday, 16 August, at the beach in the Olimp resort, in front of the Hotel Muntenia. Vasile Borteș, head of the lifeguard service for the southern littoral, described what happened in an interview on Digi24. According to Borteș, one of the three was pulled out by lifeguards, a second slipped from the lifeguards' grasp, and a third remained in the water. The area where the incident occurred is known as Faleza Olimp, Steaua de Mare.

The body of a 17-year-old boy was recovered from the water by a lifeguard. The Constanța County Ambulance Service (SAJ) team began resuscitation manoeuvres at the shore, but the adolescent was declared dead at the scene despite the efforts. ISU Dobrogea confirmed that the person pulled from the water could not be saved. A second person from the group remains missing, with the search operation still under way as of Sunday evening.
Digi24 reported the three young people as being between 18 and 25 years old, while HotNews and Mediafax identified the deceased as a 17-year-old. The articles do not reconcile the age discrepancy.
Search and rescue operation
The Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) Dobrogea was alerted after two people were reported missing in the sea in the Faleza Olimp, Steaua de Mare area. The Mangalia intervention boat and a fire engine were dispatched to the scene. Ten divers from ISU Constanța were deployed with three vehicles to assist in the underwater search.

The operation was still in progress as of the latest reports on Sunday afternoon and evening. Authorities indicated that further information would be provided as new data emerged, and the search for the missing person continued.
Other rescues on the Romanian coast
At Eforie Sud, two men aged 24 and 22 were pulled from the water by tourists. Both received medical care at a first-aid point staffed by rescuers from the Șenilata unit. The 22-year-old was transported to hospital, while the 24-year-old refused transport after receiving treatment on site.
At Eforie Nord, two children aged 12 were pulled from the water by lifeguards. ISU Constanța confirmed that hospital transport was not required for either child. The Șenilata tracked vehicle was deployed to the scene.
