Polish teen confesses to Kędzierzyn-Koźle forest murder and Opole assault

Charges filed after confession

Prosecutors in Opole presented two charges on 2 September 2026 against 19-year-old Jakub L., following his arrest in Kędzierzyn-Koźle. The suspect admitted to killing 49-year-old Diana R. on 28 August 2026 and to an earlier hammer attack against Jan K. in Opole on the night of 4 to 5 July 2026. An autopsy completed on Wednesday revealed five hammer blows to the head and a knife stab wound to the abdomen of Diana R. Stanisław Bar, spokesperson for the District Prosecutor's Office in Opole, confirmed that investigators classified the act as homicide committed with special cruelty. Jakub L. faces between 15 and 30 years in prison or life imprisonment under Polish law.

Due to the perpetrator's manner of operation, we have assumed that the murder was committed with special cruelty.

Arrest and evidence collection

Police detained Jakub L. on 1 September 2026 at around 14:40 near the forest border by the Żabieniec housing estate in Kędzierzyn-Koźle. Plainclothes officers intervened after residents reported a suspicious item and provided recordings from private surveillance and dashboard cameras. During a search of his backpack, officers seized a carpenter's hammer, a hunting knife, and identified bloodstains on the fabric. Aspirant Ewelina Karpińska of the Opole Voivodeship Police press team confirmed that the youth matched the visual profile compiled from forest surveillance. Investigators had previously urged drivers travelling near Żabieniec and the Odrzańskie Ogrody shopping centre between 14:00 and 20:00 on 28 August to supply dashcam files.

Connecting the Opole hammer attack

During initial questioning, Jakub L. told officers that he also perpetrated the unsolved assault on Wapienna Street in Opole two months earlier. On the night of 4 to 5 July 2026, Jan K. was struck repeatedly in the head with a hammer while sitting on a bench. A passing electric scooter rider discovered the wounded victim and alerted emergency services. Medical personnel at the hospital determined the skull fractures were inflicted intentionally rather than caused by an accidental fall. Opole investigators confirmed that security footage from the Opole location showed an individual matching the physical description of Jakub L. The victim has remained unconscious in hospital since the incident.

Motives and psychiatric evaluation

Evidence collected by prosecutors indicates that both individuals were targeted at random without any prior relationship to Jakub L. The 49-year-old victim, an employee of the Twierdza cinema, had departed her residence with her bicycle and dog between 16:00 and 18:30 on 28 August. A passing cyclist discovered her body roughly 20 metres from the path, where her dog had remained. Jakub L. told investigators that he acted because voices in his head commanded him to attack. Prosecutors submitted a motion to the court for temporary arrest, noting that Polish penal institutions operate hospital wards suitable for suspects requiring medical supervision.

At this moment, it seems that the suspect's motivation stems from his state of health. His attitude and the content of his explanations indicate that an examination by psychiatric experts will be necessary to assess his sanity.
