Taylor Swift joins Dakota Johnson on Saturday Night Live following Patient Zero video release
Taylor Swift appeared during Dakota Johnson's opening monologue on Saturday Night Live, joking about friendship and breakups as NBC aired the second episode of season 52.
Surprise cameo during the opening monologue
Taylor Swift made an unannounced appearance during the opening monologue of Saturday Night Live on NBC, joining host Dakota Johnson on stage in Studio 8H. Johnson opened the broadcast by reflecting on her personal life since her previous hosting stint, joking about going through two public breakups with musicians over the past two years. She described having supportive friends who refrained from judging her dating choices, prompting Swift to step out from backstage to banter about their dynamic. Swift playfully disputed the therapist label, telling the audience about Johnson visiting her home late at night before security escorting her back.
I'm not your therapist actually. you just show up once a week at my house with an emptty bottle of wine.
Swift also used the live broadcast to congratulate Johnson on her 37th birthday, which falls on Sunday, as the show approached midnight in New York. While Turnstile served as the official musical guest for the episode, Swift's cameo followed an Easter egg in an earlier Emmy Awards sketch, where a Saturday Night Live logo appeared on a background bulletin board.
Behind the scenes of Patient Zero
The live television reunion follows their collaboration on the music video for Swift's single "Patient Zero", which premiered on 27 September at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards. Swift directed and co-starred in the video alongside Johnson and actor Colin Farrell. The narrative portrays an upper-class marriage in distress, where Johnson plays a woman whose health deteriorates while married to Farrell's character, and Swift appears as the ghost of Farrell's previous wife warning her about his past.
Sometimes when you work with your friends it can really go south, and it will affect your friendship. But she and I work really well together.
On 3 October, Swift released an eight-minute behind-the-scenes featurette titled "Patient Zero (Expanded Video)" exclusively on Apple Music, linking the project via her Instagram Stories. The featurette documents the production process, showing Swift directing sequences shot by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. The footage captured lighthearted moments on set, including an argument between Johnson and Farrell over whether Brendan Fraser starred in Tarzan or George of the Jungle, alongside an underwater sequence filmed in a Los Angeles pool.
