Szczecin prepares to remove 250 kg World War II bomb near Kijewo junction

Sappers in Szczecin will remove an unexploded aerial bomb dating from World War II following its discovery in a forested area on the outskirts of the city. The unexploded ordnance was found on Friday, 18 September 2026, in woods located close to the Kijewo interchange and Szosa Stargardzka. Technical specialists assessed the munition and confirmed that the bomb weighs approximately 250 kilograms. Because the discovery site sits immediately beside crucial regional transport arteries, Szczecin municipal authorities coordinated with emergency units to prepare a comprehensive extraction and security plan.
Sapper operation and timing
The municipal government scheduled the recovery operation for Monday, 21 September 2026, with work set to commence at around 10:00. Sappers will extract the 250-kilogram munition and transport it away for safe neutralization. Road safety measures and traffic halts will be implemented shortly prior to the start of the extraction to protect passing drivers. City officials noted that disruptions will be kept as brief as possible while bomb disposal specialists secure the unexploded device.
Press spokesperson for the Mayor of Szczecin Łukasz Kolasa described the planned timing and traffic stoppage on Sunday.
Traffic will be stopped in every direction near the Kijewo junction and Szosa Stargardzka. This will take place several to over a dozen minutes before the bomb is recovered. According to initial estimates, disruptions may last about 30 minutes.

Planned motorway and national road closures
The extraction procedure will require temporary traffic stoppages across two primary transit links serving Szczecin and surrounding municipalities. Authorities will halt all vehicular movement in every direction near the Kijewo interchange and on national road 10, designated locally as Szosa Stargardzka. In addition, services will shut down a section of the A6 motorway located between the Dąbie junction and the Podjuchy junction during the operation. Municipal officials issued an appeal to all drivers, urging them to exercise caution, allocate extra travel time, and strictly follow the directions of officers stationed along the affected routes.
Designated detour routes for local traffic
To manage diverted traffic during the road closures, the city established four separate detour options for private and commercial vehicles. Drivers approaching from Stargard on national road 10 will follow an alternate route via Szosa Stargardzka, Profesora Żuka, Bałtycka, Tczewska, Irydowa, Goleniowska, Gierczak, Krzywoń, Gryfińska, and Hangarowa. A second detour redirects vehicles arriving from the direction of ulica Gdańska and Rondo Ułanów Podolskich along Gryfińska, Krzywoń, Gierczak, Goleniowska, Irydowa, Tczewska, Bałtycka, and Profesora Żuka to reconnect with DK10 toward Stargard.
Motorists travelling on the A6 motorway from Goleniów will divert at the Dąbie junction, passing through Irydowa, Goleniowska, Gierczak, Krzywoń, Gryfińska, Batalionów Chłopskich, Granitowa, and Radosna to Rondo Żołnierzy Wyklętych before rejoining the A6 toward Kołbaskowo. Traffic moving northbound on the A6 from Kołbaskowo will exit at the Podjuchy junction and take the reverse corridor through Rondo Żołnierzy Wyklętych, Radosna, Granitowa, Batalionów Chłopskich, Gryfińska, Krzywoń, Gierczak, Goleniowska, and Irydowa to rejoin the A6 toward Gdańsk.
