Swiss ski championships head Claude-Alain Schmidhalter resigns following fraud indictment
Claude-Alain Schmidhalter stepped down as president of the Crans-Montana 2027 Alpine skiing world championships and vice president of Swiss-Ski after being indicted for fraud in his private engineering business.
Leadership suspension and resignation
The organizing president of the 2027 Alpine World Ski Championships in Crans-Montana, Claude-Alain Schmidhalter, stepped down from his sports administration roles on 7 October 2026 following criminal charges in the canton of Valais. Swiss-Ski and the tournament governing board initially issued a provisional suspension against the 62-year-old official, who also held the position of vice president within the national ski federation. Shortly after the suspension was announced, Schmidhalter declared his immediate resignation from both posts, stating that the organizing committee required leadership stability ahead of the events. The ski federation stated that the legal proceedings relate entirely to his commercial activities and carry no connection to his official duties in skiing.
I draw the consequences from this and step down with immediate effect as president of the organizing committee of the 2027 Ski World Championships and as vice president of Swiss-Ski. I am not doing this because I have anything to reproach myself for. I am doing it because the World Championships need clarity now.
Indictment details and financial allegations
The public prosecutor's office of Valais canton indicted Schmidhalter and an alleged co-conspirator on charges of fraud and unfaithful business management. According to the indictment, the charges originate from the commercial management of an engineering company based in Upper Valais that Schmidhalter co-owned. Under a prior agreement between the business partners, whichever partner remained in control of the firm was required to pay a retirement buyout settlement to the departing co-owner. Prosecutors state that a payment was made, but allege that the defendants transferred company earnings to a separate corporate entity to artificially lower reported profits. The indictment states that this financial diversion caused the retired business partner losses exceeding 300,000 Swiss francs (approximately $360,000). Schmidhalter denies the charges, and Swiss-Ski noted that he retains the presumption of innocence.

Court hearing and requested penalties
The case will be heard on 27 October 2026 before the Brig-Glis District Court, though one regional report cited 21 October. In the formal indictment, cantonal prosecutors indicated that they will request a 23-month suspended prison sentence for Schmidhalter. The prosecution also requested a judicial fine of 10,000 Swiss francs and 55,000 Swiss francs in direct restitution to the victim. Schmidhalter rejected the accusations in public statements and indicated that he faces the upcoming hearing with confidence.
Interim management and tournament preparations
To maintain operational capabilities, Swiss-Ski and the championship executive board established an interim leadership structure for Crans-Montana 2027. Sébastien Rey, vice president of the championship board and representative of the Association of Crans-Montana Municipalities, will lead the organizing committee jointly with Diego Züger, co-CEO and board member of Swiss-Ski. Swiss-Ski president Peter Barandun and Sébastien Rey praised Schmidhalter's prior contributions to the sport while confirming the leadership change.
Claude-Alain has done excellent and impeccable work for years as vice president of Swiss-Ski and world championship board member, for which we are extremely grateful. This step is intended to preserve the integrity and operational capability of both organizations.
The Alpine World Ski Championships are scheduled to take place in Crans-Montana from 1 February to 14 February 2027. The resort community is hosting the competition 13 months after a fatal bar fire in the village that resulted in 41 deaths and 115 injuries, an incident for which bar owners and local public officials face ongoing legal charges.
