Taylor Swift collected three trophies at the MTV Video Music Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, bringing her career total to 33 and taking sole possession of the all-time record. Swift had entered the night tied with Beyoncé at 30 trophies each. Swift won Video of the Year for "The Fate of Ophelia", a track from her album "The Life of a Showgirl". In that category, she finished ahead of nominees Madonna, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Sabrina Carpenter, and Gener8ion featuring Yung Lean. Dressed in a floor-length black and silver gown, Swift also collected the Best Direction award for "Opalite" and received the newly introduced Artist Director Honors.

Directing honors and Dolly Parton tribute
The new Artist Director Honors award recognizes artists whose work behind the camera expands visual storytelling in music videos. Actress Dakota Johnson presented the trophy to Swift, praising the singer as a visionary storyteller. Swift explained during her acceptance speech that she has contributed to roughly 60 music videos over the past 20 years, writing and directing 18 of them. Swift used the gala to hold the world premiere of her music video for "Patient Zero", a track about a toxic relationship starring Johnson and Colin Farrell as a quarreling couple. At the conclusion of the broadcast, Swift dedicated her Video of the Year award to country music icon Dolly Parton, who died in August at age 80, describing Parton as the ultimate showgirl whose storytelling was vivid and deep across every song.

Madonna leads ceremony tally with seven wins
Madonna earned the highest number of awards during the gala, converting 13 nominations into seven trophies. The 68-year-old performer was named Artist of the Year and won Album of the Year. She opened the broadcast with a medley from "Confessions on a Dance Floor II", marking her first live musical performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in 23 years. Madonna brought dozens of singers and dancers to the stage, performing "Bring Your Love" with Sabrina Carpenter. The duo won the award for Best Collaboration for the track. Madonna also debuted the song "Danceteria Afterhours" on stage alongside Charli XCX.

Former Nirvana members Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl, and Pat Smear appeared on stage to accept an award, revisiting the event where their band first appeared in 1992. Rapper Snoop Dogg served as master of ceremonies for the first time at the annual event, which began in 1984 and selects winners through online fan voting.
