The victory gave the European squad an unassailable 13-5 advantage over Team World on the final day of competition at the O2 Arena. Earlier on Sunday, Europe built momentum when Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik defeated the Team World pairing of Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-3 in doubles. Zverev's subsequent triumph in singles meant that the remaining two scheduled Sunday matches were not required to determine the champion. As a consequence, planned appearances by Carlos Alcaraz and Rafa Jodar were cancelled before they took the court.

On-court tension and tournament records

The world number two and reigning US Open champion faced initial resistance against the 20-year-old Tien, displaying frustration with both his opponent's tactical style and the grey court surface at the London venue. During a changeover in the opening set, Fritz offered an assessment of Zverev's mood while speaking to Tien on the Team World bench.

Zverev regained control during the first-set tiebreak, taking it 7-3 before dictating play throughout the second set to seal the win. The match marked Zverev's 26th individual match victory in Laver Cup history, the highest total recorded by any player since the tournament began in 2017. The German player entered Sunday with Europe holding a 7-5 lead following Saturday's schedule, where Alcaraz had won an important rubber to stabilize the team's standing against Team World.

Tournament format and leadership

The London event marked the ninth edition of the annual team competition, which was established in 2017 by Roger Federer and named in honour of Australian tennis player Rod Laver. Team Europe was led from the bench by captain Yannick Noah, while former world number one Andre Agassi captained Team World. With the 13-5 final margin, Europe regained the trophy following a loss at the 2025 event in San Francisco, extending its overall record in the competition to six victories against three for Team World. Federer, aged 45, watched the concluding session from the stands alongside actor Leonardo DiCaprio, aged 51.

Ranking context and future venues

While the Laver Cup does not award official ATP ranking points, the weekend coincided with developments in the race for the year-end world number one ranking. World number one Jannik Sinner announced on Friday that he will skip the ATP tournament in Beijing due to persistent knee problems, preventing him from defending 500 points from his 2025 title. Sinner faces significantly more ranking points to defend across the remaining tournaments of the season compared with Zverev, improving the German player's path toward the top spot. The Laver Cup will return to the United States in 2027, with the Intuit Dome, home arena of the NBA team Los Angeles Clippers, scheduled to host the tenth edition.
