
NASA and Katalyst call off $30 million rescue of Swift space telescope
NASA and Katalyst Space have abandoned a $30 million mission to boost the orbit of the Swift space telescope after the rescue craft suffered propulsion and attitude control failures.
Rescue operation called off
NASA and aerospace startup Katalyst Space have terminated their joint mission to intercept and elevate the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, leaving the aging scientific instrument on track to deorbit. The American space agency announced the decision on 19 August 2026 following weeks of technical complications aboard the robotic servicing craft. Swift, a triple telescope launched in 2004 to investigate energetic gamma-ray bursts across the universe, has been operating in low Earth orbit for more than two decades. The observatory remains in high demand among international researchers, but atmospheric drag has gradually lowered its orbit to approximately 347 kilometres above Earth. Without orbital propulsion to counteract this decline, the spacecraft is expected to enter Earth's atmosphere and burn up later in 2026.
In-orbit spin and control failures
The rescue vehicle, named LINK, was launched on 3 July 2026 using an air-dropped Pegasus rocket deployed from a carrier aircraft over a Pacific atoll. Following orbital insertion, the unmanned robotic craft experienced critical guidance anomalies that placed it into an uncontrolled rotation. Katalyst reported on 28 July 2026 that the vehicle had been spinning continuously for 72 hours while suffering communication dropouts with ground stations. Engineering teams spent multiple weeks trying to regain control of the spacecraft, eventually transmitting updated flight software to the attitude control computer in mid-August. Although the software update succeeded in slowing the rotation, it failed to halt the spin entirely, leaving the craft unable to establish the precision alignment necessary for docking.
This is not the outcome we were working toward, but it does not change why this mission was worth attempting.
Mission profile and satellite investment
The $30 million servicing contract was structured as a test of orbital life-extension techniques for high-value spacecraft, with Swift representing an initial development cost of $250 million and a replacement valuation of up to $500 million. Under the original flight plan, LINK was designed to locate Swift in orbit, approach the moving telescope, and secure itself to the body of the satellite using three articulated mechanical arms. After latching onto the craft, LINK was scheduled to fire its propulsion system over a period of at least one month. The extended burn would have pushed Swift approximately 300 kilometres higher to an altitude of 600 kilometres, returning the telescope to its original operational envelope.

Proximity tests and future satellite servicing
With capture operations ruled out, mission controllers will redirect the LINK spacecraft to fly in close proximity to Swift rather than docking. The adjusted flight plan aims to test optical tracking systems and autonomous proximity sensors during the close approach, allowing Katalyst and NASA to gather telemetry under real orbital conditions. NASA leadership maintained that the project provided valuable operational experience for American in-space servicing capabilities.
The team moved with extraordinary speed to give Swift a chance to carry out more science while advancing capabilities America will need for satellite servicing in the future.
