Taylor Swift collected three trophies at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, bringing her career total to 33 awards. The total moves Swift past Beyoncé, who holds 30 awards, making Swift the most decorated artist in the ceremony's history. Swift claimed Video of the Year for "The Fate of Ophelia" from her album "The Life of a Showgirl", prevailing over nominees Madonna, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Sabrina Carpenter, and Gener8ion featuring Yung Lean. She also secured Best Direction for "Opalite" and accepted the newly introduced Artist Director Honors award.

In every single song she wrote, her storytelling was so vivid.

In her acceptance remarks, Swift stated that over the past 20 years she contributed to roughly 60 music videos, writing and directing 18 of them. Swift dedicated her Video of the Year victory to country musician Dolly Parton, who died in August at age 80. During the ceremony, Swift premiered the music video for her single "Patient Zero", starring Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson, who also presented Swift with her directing honour.

Madonna sweeps top categories

Madonna secured the highest award count of the night, winning seven trophies from 13 nominations and increasing her career total to 27 awards. The 68-year-old singer was named Artist of the Year and collected Best Collaboration alongside Sabrina Carpenter for their track "Bring Your Love". Her visual project "Confessions II - The Film" captured four category wins spanning choreography, cinematography, dance, and longform video, alongside an award for Best Album.

During her speech for Artist of the Year, Madonna recalled an anecdote from the inaugural 1984 VMAs when a wardrobe issue occurred while performing on stage. Her acceptance appearances prompted audience confusion after she acknowledged she had prepared no remarks. When accepting the trophy in the dance category, Madonna called the presenters back to the microphone to clarify which category she had won.

Opening performance and stage cameos

Madonna opened the broadcast with her first live singing performance on the VMA stage in 23 years, following her 2003 appearance alongside Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Wearing a black coat over a red dress, she began the medley seated atop a piano as Carpenter played the opening chords to "Bring Your Love". Charli XCX then entered from a restroom cubicle to perform their collaboration "Danceteria Afterhours" live for the first time.

The stage set was designed to resemble a public men's restroom with urinals and stalls, where background dancers fired lasers during the routine. The staging included cameo appearances by actor Julia Garner, Debi Mazar, Seth Rogen, Sombr, Fab Five Freddy, and music producer Andrew Watt. Ceremony host Snoop Dogg addressed the performance immediately afterward, making reference to Madonna's 1984 performance of "Like a Virgin".

Additional winners across categories

Rapper Snoop Dogg hosted the annual ceremony for the first time as online fan balloting decided the winners of the astronaut-shaped Moon Person trophies. South Korean group BTS won three honours during the evening, securing Song of the Year for "Swim", Best Group, and Best K-Pop. Ariana Grande took home Song of Summer for "hate that i made you love me", while Lisa claimed the Best Pop category. British singer Sienna Spiro received the Best New Artist award at the ceremony. The awards show concluded the annual event, which MTV has presented since 1984.
