Taylor Swift to receive inaugural Artist Director award at 2026 MTV VMAs
MTV and CBS have named Taylor Swift as the first recipient of the Artist Director Honors, a new category recognizing musicians for their work behind the camera.
Directorial recognition
CBS and MTV announced on September 21 that Taylor Swift will receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27. The newly introduced accolade acknowledges recording artists who direct their visual releases and build an individual cinematic portfolio. Swift made her solo directorial debut in 2020 with the music video for "The Man," which won best direction at that year's VMAs. In 2021, she released "All Too Well: The Short Film," a project that collected three awards at the 2022 ceremony, including video of the year, best longform video, and best direction.
According to the networks' joint announcement, the award recognizes long-term visual contributions:
celebrates a sustained and influential body of work from artists who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a clear directorial voice.
Swift's directorial work also includes videos for "Cardigan," "Willow," "Anti-Hero," "Bejeweled," "Lavender Haze," "Karma," "Fortnight," "I Can See You," and "The Fate of Ophelia." Across her career, she has secured seven nominations and four wins in the best direction category. The presentation of the special trophy will bring her all-time count to 31 Moon Person statuettes, moving her ahead of Beyoncé (30) for the most trophies in VMA history. Rapper Eminem holds the record among male artists with 15 awards.

Nomination counts and contenders
The nominations for the 2026 ceremony place Madonna and Swift at the top of the ballot, though source reports provide different totals for both artists. Madonna leads the slate with either 11 or 13 nominations, including entries for video of the year with "Confessions II - The Film" and song of the year with "Bring Your Love." Swift follows with either 9 or 11 nominations, including nods for artist of the year, best album for "The Life of a Showgirl," song of summer for "I Knew It, I Knew You," and video of the year for "The Fate of Ophelia."

The race for video of the year also features Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Sabrina Carpenter, and GENER8ION with Yung Lean. Across all categories, Grande and Carpenter each hold seven nominations, while Mars, PinkPantheress, and Zara Larsson hold five each. At the previous ceremony in 2025, Lady Gaga won four awards, including artist of the year, while Grande won video of the year for "Brighter Days Ahead." Rock band Nirvana will receive the Video Vanguard Award during the event.
Telecast schedule and stage lineup
The ceremony will take place on September 27 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, airing live from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET (4:30 to 6:30 p.m. PT) on CBS and MTV. Viewers in the United States can stream the broadcast live on Paramount+, while international markets will receive access via MTV and Paramount+ on September 28. Snoop Dogg will serve as host for the evening.
Madonna will open the ceremony, representing her first live performance on the VMA stage in 23 years. The broadcast schedule includes live performances by Shaboozey with Gunna, GENER8ION with Yung Lean, Lisa, Raye, and Sienna Spiro. Fan voting across 13 categories remains open online until September 25, while voting for the best new artist category will continue during the live telecast.
