Suspicious object at Bavarian station halts rail traffic, found to be a deliberate dummy
A suspicious object found on the tracks at Treuchtlingen station in Bavaria brought train traffic to a standstill on 13 August before police confirmed it was a deliberately placed dummy with no explosives.
Discovery and emergency response
A Deutsche Bahn technician discovered a suspicious object in the track bed at the entrance to Treuchtlingen station in Bavaria on the morning of 13 August 2026. The technician found the object suspicious and alerted the authorities, a police spokesperson said. Special police forces inspected the object found on the tracks, and a team of federal police bomb disposal experts was then called in to determine whether it posed a genuine threat. Treuchtlingen, with about 13,000 inhabitants, lies between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt in the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen district and was once an important railway hub.
Special forces of the Bundespolizei deployed a bomb disposal robot to examine the object. An initial X-ray examination could not definitively rule out explosives, a spokesperson for the Mittelfranken police told the F.A.Z. The object was to be examined more closely as a precaution, with the bomb disposal robot lifting it for further inspection. The spokesperson did not provide further details about the suspicious object itself. According to Bild newspaper, a mobile phone was found next to the object on the tracks.
As a precaution, three houses adjacent to the tracks were evacuated. From the morning onward, people in the city were asked to avoid the area around the station and take wide detours around the cordoned-off zone. Emergency services carried out the evacuations while the bomb disposal operation was underway.
Train traffic halted
The discovery brought train traffic in the Treuchtlingen area to a complete standstill. According to Deutsche Bahn, the affected regional services included the RB 16, the RE 16, and the RE 60. Regional trains terminated early at suitable stations, and a replacement service with buses and large-capacity taxis was established. Long-distance trains were diverted via Ingolstadt. The blockade affected several regional services and long-distance routes in the region.

All-clear and investigation
The police subsequently gave the all-clear. No explosives were found on the object, police at the scene said. The object was apparently meant to look like an explosive charge, according to n-tv citing police. Investigators concluded that the object had been deliberately placed as a dummy.
The investigations have shown that it is not explosives. Criminal police measures are now being carried out on site.
Michael Konrad from the Police Headquarters in Mittelfranken explained the situation to n-tv. The federal police were on site, and investigators were able to give the all-clear. Criminal police measures were being conducted at the scene to investigate the deliberate placement of the dummy device on the tracks.
Conflicting accounts
Adnkronos reported that the suspicion of explosive material had not yet been ruled out and that experts were awaiting further verification by specialized forces. That account also stated that nearby buildings were being evacuated as a precaution and that it was not yet known when railway traffic would resume.
