An estimated 3.3 billion people across the Americas, Europe and Africa will be able to observe the eclipse, which will tint the lunar surface red just before dawn in Europe and around midnight on the US East Coast.

A partial lunar eclipse will coincide with the August full moon overnight between 27 and 28 August 2026, placing Earth directly between the Sun and the Moon. At the peak of the alignment, Earth's curved shadow will cover 96% of the lunar surface, leaving only a small fraction exposed to direct sunlight. The filtered and refracted light passing through Earth's atmosphere will cast a reddish hue across the shadowed disc. In Greek time, the full moon reaches its exact phase opposite the Sun at 00:18 on 28 August. The eclipse itself will begin at approximately 04:30 and will conclude at 07:19 in the morning.

Astronomical projections indicate that the eclipse will be visible to roughly 3.3 billion people worldwide. The viewing path covers North America, South America, and portions of Europe and Africa, with the local time of maximum coverage depending on geographical position. Observers in the United Kingdom, continental Europe and Africa will witness the event in the morning hours before sunrise as the Moon descends toward the western horizon. Along the eastern coast of the United States, the eclipse will reach its peak around midnight local time, while skywatchers on the western coast can view it several hours after sunset. The phenomenon will not be visible in Australia, India, China or Japan, where daylight will keep the Moon below the horizon. The event is completely safe to view with the naked eye, though binoculars or telescopes will provide clearer details of lunar craters as the shadow moves across the surface.
Cultural origins of the Sturgeon Moon
The August full moon carries the traditional name of the Sturgeon Moon, a designation linked to Native American heritage. The Old Farmer's Almanac, which first began printing traditional full moon names during the 1930s, attributes the moniker to the freshwater sturgeon found in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. Indigenous populations in the region caught the large fish with relative ease during late summer, making it an essential food source. While the fish was once abundant in the late summer months, catches have become far rarer in modern times. Sturgeon represent an ancient lineage dating back roughly 136 million years, leading many to describe them as living fossils. Female sturgeon require roughly 20 years to reach reproductive maturity and spawn only once every 4 years, though individuals can live up to 150 years. Around 29 sturgeon species exist worldwide today, having evolved to smaller sizes comparable to sea bass.
