Four Hours Upside Down: Eight Students Rescued from Stalled Texas Rollercoaster 30 Metres Above the Sea
A school trip turned into a four-hour ordeal for eight teenagers left dangling upside down at the top of the Iron Shark rollercoaster in Galveston, Texas, after a malfunction triggered an emergency stop.
The incident
Eight students from two schools in Houston were left suspended nearly 30 metres in the air on Thursday afternoon when the Iron Shark rollercoaster at the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier malfunctioned. The ride, which features a near-vertical drop at speeds of over 83 km/h, stalled during its initial ascent, leaving the car tilted at roughly 90 degrees with the passengers' feet dangling over the Gulf of Mexico.
The ride experienced a malfunction at its initial ascent, however, as designed, it immediately stopped to keep everyone safe.
The emergency stop activated automatically when the onboard computer detected a mechanical error. Pleasure Pier's chief operating officer, Terry Turney, confirmed that all safety systems functioned as intended, locking the car in place on the tracks.
The rescue operation
Firefighters received the first call at 17:37 local time and arrived promptly, but the recovery proved exceptionally difficult. The park's own elevating platform, typically used for evacuations, itself suffered mechanical problems, forcing rescuers to rely on a fire truck ladder extended to its maximum reach of 32 metres.
Of course they were shaken up from climbing that ladder down, being in that hot sun. They have been checked for dehydration and everyone seems to be doing pretty good.
One by one, the students were secured with harnesses, their safety bars were released, and they were guided down the ladder. The operation took over three hours, with the last person reaching the ground shortly after 21:00. Galveston Fire Chief Mike Varela Jr. noted the students were visibly shaken but also showed relief and joy upon touching solid ground.

Aftermath and investigation
The Pleasure Pier remained closed during the rescue and the Iron Shark has been taken out of service pending a thorough inspection. Landry's Inc., the park's operator, stated that the ride will undergo a complete review before being placed back into operation. Authorities are investigating the cause of the mechanical fault.
