A strong earthquake shook southern Peru on Thursday, 20 August 2026, at 13:00 local time (18:00 GMT). The seismic movement originated in the Andean province of Parinacochas within the Ayacucho department. Tremors spread across multiple southern departments, generating noticeable shaking in Ica and Arequipa. In the town of Coracora, situated approximately 650 kilometres south of Lima, the ground movement reached an intensity of III to IV on the local seismic scale. Residents in the capital city of Lima, located between 650 and 800 kilometres north of the epicenter, also reported mild vibrations in tall buildings.
Discrepancies in geological measurements
International and national seismic monitoring agencies reported differing figures regarding the exact strength and depth of the earthquake. The Geophysical Institute of Peru recorded a magnitude of 7.2 at a focal depth of 108 kilometres, placing the epicenter 35 kilometres north of Coracora. The United States Geological Survey calculated the event at magnitude 6.7 with a hypocentre located 66.7 kilometres underground, setting the epicenter 38 kilometres northwest of Upahuacho. The German Research Centre for Geosciences registered the quake at magnitude 6.6 at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres in central Peru.

Emergency response and initial field reports
Peru's National Emergency Operations Centre confirmed the technical coordinates of the tremor and initiated assessments across the southern highlands. Initial official reports confirmed that no deaths or injuries had been recorded in the immediate aftermath of the event. Local news outlets in Ayacucho reported isolated rockfalls along Andean roads and structural cracks in several residential properties. Geophysical Institute of Peru director Hernando Tavera addressed the situation shortly after the event occurred.
For now nothing critical has occurred.
Tavera added that specialized teams are evaluating the surrounding terrain for secondary geological movements and structural risks across Parinacochas province.
