Russian barrage kills 15 in Kyiv as Romania and Moldova report drone incidents
An overnight Russian assault involving 168 missiles and drones killed at least 15 people in Kyiv, while Romania destroyed an armed sea drone near an offshore gas rig and Moldova tracked an airspace breach.
Massive strike on Kyiv
Russia launched an overnight barrage of 168 missiles and drones against Ukraine on 20 August, causing casualties and damage across Kyiv and surrounding regions. As of Thursday afternoon, the State Emergency Service confirmed at least 15 people were killed and 39 others injured in the capital, an increase from an initial toll of 12 fatalities and 33 injuries reported by Mayor Vitali Klitschko. More than 600 emergency responders and police officers deployed across Kyiv, Brovary, and Boryspil, focusing operations on the Solomianskyi district where crews dismantled collapsed floors of a damaged multi-story apartment block. The bombardment damaged 30 residential buildings, a secondary school, a kindergarten, and a children's hospital across Kyiv and the Kyiv region. Municipal authorities declared Friday an official day of mourning in the capital.
Air defense and ammunition needs
Ukrainian air defenses intercepted all Russian Kalibr cruise missiles deployed during the attack, recording an overall 93% success rate against cruise missiles alongside neutralizing a large portion of incoming drones. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that ballistic missiles remain the primary operational threat to civilian and military infrastructure, emphasizing that interception capabilities depend on external ammunition supplies.
And that depends entirely on the delivery of missiles for Patriot systems to Ukraine, and therefore on the partners of our state.

Black Sea gas platform incident
The overnight barrage coincided with maritime and airspace incidents along the Black Sea coast. On Thursday morning, a Romanian F-16 fighter jet used its onboard cannon to destroy an explosive-laden sea drone drifting within hundreds of meters of the Neptun Deep offshore gas extraction platform, roughly 80 kilometers east of the port of Constanța. Romanian Defense Minister Radu Dinel Mîruță confirmed that the vessel was loaded with explosives and did not originate from Ukraine, leading to the dispatch of a military sapper unit to verify site security. Romanian President Nicușor Dan published an image of the sea drone while condemning the escalation of irresponsible incidents by Russia. The incident follows the destruction of two Russian Gerbera drones by Romanian military divers on 11 August approximately 165 kilometers from Constanța, as well as a separate drone crash in an uninhabited area of Tulcea County overnight.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the naval encounter as part of a deliberate pressure campaign.
An intimidation campaign is gaining momentum, which worries our citizens and aims to divide the Union.
Regional airspace incursions and border alerts
Security alerts and incursions also affected neighbouring airspace across Eastern Europe during the overnight strikes. In Moldova, defense radar tracked a Shahed-136 drone entering national airspace from Ukraine's Reni district at 03:16 toward the southern locality of Etulia in Gagauzia, before exiting back toward Ukrainian territory at 03:22 with no reported casualties or ground damage. In Poland, the Government Security Centre sent emergency mobile alerts shortly after 04:00 to residents in the border voivodeships of Lubelskie and Podkarpackie warning of heavy aerial strikes in western Ukraine, rescinding the alert approximately one hour later. Polish fighter jets scrambled during the strikes, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that no breach of Polish airspace occurred, while Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński outlined ongoing administrative work to automate sirens with the State Fire Service and launch a unified threat application by the end of the year.
