Vice-captain Lukas Daschner noted that the squad held internal discussions to analyze performance errors following recent heavy defeats, including a 3-0 loss to Sion. Head coach Enrico Maassen adjusted his tactics for the trip to Basel, pulling the pressing line deeper to stabilize the back line and contest defensive duels more effectively. St. Gallen limited Basel to only two shots on target across the entire 90 minutes.

Maassen addressed the squad's recovery after recent defensive vulnerabilities.

Basel struggles and managerial vacancy

For FC Basel, the result marked their fourth home defeat of the league campaign and their third consecutive loss at St. Jakob-Park. Interim manager Luigi Nocentini had guided the team to a 4-2 away victory against FC Luzern after the dismissal of Stephan Lichtsteiner, but his squad struggled to generate chances, with playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri unable to penetrate the opposing defense. Goalkeeper Mirko Salvi, who signed a contract extension before the fixture, acknowledged that the squad lacked the necessary determination to recover after falling behind. Nocentini does not possess the coaching license required for a permanent appointment, leaving club leadership to finalize a successor during the upcoming three-week international break.

Nocentini stated that team execution remains the primary concern rather than the coaching search.

Our most urgent problem is not who becomes the new coach, but that we have no more excuses.

League standings and head-to-head records

Basel technical director Andreas Herrmann stated that the club is seeking an experienced coach with authority to manage difficult periods, confirming that shortlisted managers such as Sandro Wagner were unavailable after Wagner took over at Hannover 96. With this result, St. Gallen moved up to fifth place on 13 points, remaining 12 points behind league leaders FC Lugano. St. Gallen also extended their unbeaten streak against Basel to eight matches, comprising five wins and three draws dating back to the 2024/25 season. In other ninth-round action, Lugano defeated Lausanne 4-0 while FC Thun won 2-1 at FC Vaduz. Super League fixtures will resume on 11 October 2026, when Basel travels to play Vaduz and St. Gallen hosts Lausanne.
