South Africa recall Pollard and bracket Kolisi for second Test against New Zealand

Half-back overhaul and backline adjustments

South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus has made several changes to his starting lineup for Saturday's second Test against New Zealand at DHL Stadium in Cape Town. Experienced fly-half Handre Pollard and scrum-half Cobus Reinach will step into the starting half-back roles, replacing Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Grant Williams. Feinberg-Mngomezulu drops to the replacements bench after his appearance in the opening encounter, while Williams misses out completely due to an injury. In the back three, Ethan Hooker enters the starting side on the left wing, which shifts Kurt-Lee Arendse across to the right wing in place of Cheslin Kolbe, who is also sidelined with a knock.

Erasmus explained the rationale behind bringing in the experienced playmakers from the opening whistle.

Handre has delivered for us under extreme pressure, and we feel that is what he and Cobus have the potential to bring at the beginning of the game.

Kolisi condition and forward pack continuity

A fourth alteration could occur in the loose forwards, where regular team captain Siya Kolisi has been bracketed at blindside flanker alongside Paul de Villiers. Kolisi sat out the opening fixture because of a hamstring strain and must come through training sessions later in the week before securing clearance to play. If Kolisi cannot start, de Villiers will retain the number six jersey. The rest of the pack remains identical to the group that started at Ellis Park, featuring props Ox Nche and Wilco Louw alongside hooker Malcolm Marx, backed by locks Eben Etzebeth and Ruan Nortje, and number eight Jasper Wiese.

Erasmus commented on the physical demands expected during the Cape Town fixture.

The changes we made are in line with what we want to achieve on the field this week, and it is valuable that almost all of the players have been involved in the last two games, so they will be able to cope with the intensity and physicality of this match.

Bench reshaping and milestone appearances

Pieter-Steph du Toit will captain the Springboks from openside flanker and is scheduled to collect his 100th Test cap on Saturday, following Damian de Allende who reached the century mark one week earlier. Loosehead prop Ox Nche will also celebrate a personal milestone by winning his 50th international cap. On the bench, Erasmus has retained only two players from the first Test: prop Gerhard Steenekamp and versatile back Andre Esterhuizen. Veteran Deon Fourie, who turns 40 in September, enters the squad as hooker and loose-forward cover. Should Fourie take the field, he will surpass Victor Matfield and Schalk Brits, who both played their final Tests at 38 years old, to become the oldest player to feature in a Test match for South Africa. Thomas du Toit, Lood de Jager, Cameron Hanekom, and scrum-half Morne van den Berg complete the replacements list.

Series schedule and New Zealand injury update

The fixture follows New Zealand's 33-16 victory at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, a 17-point margin that represents the heaviest defeat South Africa have suffered under Erasmus and ended their 12-match winning run. That result gave the All Blacks a 1-0 advantage in the four-match series. Prior to the Cape Town encounter, New Zealand's second-string squad will play against the Lions in Johannesburg on Tuesday. New Zealand will contest the Cape Town match without prop Ethan de Groot and lock Josh Lord, who both suffered concussions after colliding heads in the series opener, prompting head coach Dave Rennie to call up veteran prop Ofa Tu'ungafasi. The tour will subsequently move to Johannesburg for a third meeting before wrapping up in Baltimore on 12 September.
