Steven Spielberg to lead creative oversight on eighth Transformers film as Michael Bay eyes return
Paramount Pictures is developing an eighth live-action Transformers film with Steven Spielberg leading creative direction, Michael Bay in early talks to direct, and Shia LaBeouf confirmed not to return.
Creative leadership and executive backing
Paramount Pictures has begun development on an eighth live-action Transformers film, appointing Steven Spielberg to lead the project's creative direction. Spielberg, who served as an executive producer on earlier installments and held close creative roles on the first two entries in 2007 and 2009, will guide the new chapter alongside veteran franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Di Bonaventura had been developing the project before Spielberg reviewed the script and formally signed on. The partnership originated from meetings held in August 2025 between Spielberg and Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg. The newly appointed studio leaders made securing Spielberg an early priority following Skydance's merger with Paramount. Producing alongside di Bonaventura are Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto, and toy maker Hasbro.
Directorial negotiations and cast changes
Michael Bay is in early talks to return to the director's chair for the eighth film. Bay directed the first five live-action entries, beginning with the original Transformers in 2007, followed by Revenge of the Fallen in 2009, Dark of the Moon in 2011, Age of Extinction in 2014, and The Last Knight in 2017. Spielberg originally selected Bay to direct the 2007 debut, and together they helped turn the Hasbro toy brand into a global box office property that has generated over $5.4 billion. Shia LaBeouf, who portrayed teenager Sam Witwicky in the early installments, is confirmed not to return for the eighth film. Discussions regarding additional casting remain in preliminary stages, while the production also follows the passing of voice actor Peter Cullen, who voiced Optimus Prime across previous films.
Screenplay and franchise history
Screenwriter Jason Fuchs, who wrote Argylle and worked on It: Welcome to Derry, drafted the modern-day screenplay that attracted both Spielberg and Bay back to the franchise. While specific narrative details remain under wraps, the script aims to return to the spirit and tone of the original live-action releases. Following Bay's departure after the 2017 film, the franchise explored alternate directions with Travis Knight's Bumblebee in 2018, Steven Caple Jr.'s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and the 2024 animated feature Transformers One. The new production forms part of Paramount's broader output target under Greenstein and Goldberg to release 30 feature films annually.

Cancellation of G.I. Joe crossover
The announcement coincides with Paramount shelving a proposed crossover film between Transformers and G.I. Joe. A shared storyline connecting the two Hasbro toy lines was teased at the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, but studio leadership decided against continuing that direction. Rather than pursuing the crossover, Paramount is developing a separate G.I. Joe project directed by Danny McBride and starring Bradley Cooper. The studio's shift refocuses the core Transformers franchise on its standalone live-action timeline under Spielberg's creative supervision as the studio operates under its merged corporate structure.
