AEMET issues yellow alerts for heat in Estepona and Cartagena, coastal warnings in Gran Canaria on Monday
AEMET has issued yellow alerts for high temperatures in parts of Andalusia and Murcia, and for coastal phenomena in Gran Canaria, as Spain faces a warm Monday with scattered light rain in the northwest.
Spain's state meteorological agency AEMET has activated yellow alerts for high temperatures in two southern areas and for coastal phenomena in parts of Gran Canaria on Monday 20 July 2026. The warnings come as most of the country expects warm, mostly dry conditions, with only Pontevedra in the northwest forecast to see light rain.
In Estepona, on the Costa del Sol, the alert covers the Costa del Sol and Valle del Guadalhorce, where maximum temperatures will reach 35°C, with a minimum of 22°C. Cartagena, in Murcia, is under the same yellow warning for the Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón area, also expecting a high of 35°C and a low of 25°C, with a thermal sensation up to 38°C. Both cities will see mostly clear skies after some early cloud.
In the Canary Islands, Santa Lucía de Tirajana and Telde are under yellow alert for coastal phenomena, though the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is not affected. Santa Lucía de Tirajana will have a cloudless day with a high of 33°C, while Telde will see some cloud in the afternoon and a high of 28°C. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will be overcast in the morning and cloudy later, with temperatures between 23°C and 27°C.
Further north, Pontevedra will see cloudy skies early, with light rain around 11:00 and again at 17:00, each bringing about 0.1 litres per square metre. AEMET notes a high probability of thunderstorms throughout the day. Maximum temperatures there will reach 26°C, with a low of 18°C. Palencia and Vitoria-Gasteiz will have mostly clear or partly cloudy skies, with highs of 34°C and 31°C respectively.
