Spain demands five platforms pull 141 vacation rental ads in Israeli settlements

The demand

On 30 July 2026, Spain's Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030 ordered five vacation rental platforms to remove 141 advertisements for tourist accommodations located in Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory. The ministry, led by Pablo Bustinduy, conducted an internal investigation that identified the active listings across five intermediary platforms operating in Spain. A first formal requirement was sent to the companies, notifying them of illicit content and urging immediate removal or blocking. The ministry warned that failure to comply would lead to further actions, though it did not specify the nature of potential sanctions. According to ministry sources cited by ABC, some platforms have already begun removing the flagged advertisements.

Legal basis

The demand rests on Article 4 of a royal decree-law approved in September 2025, which the government describes as urgent measures against the genocide in Gaza and in support of the Palestinian population. The article classifies as illicit any advertising for goods originating from Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory, as well as services provided in those settlements. The 141 listings are located in areas corresponding to more than 200 postal codes that were published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on Monday, 27 July 2026. The list, compiled by the Tax Agency, delimits zones where commercial promotion of settlement-linked goods and services is prohibited.

Previous enforcement

This is the third such intervention by the ministry. In December 2025, it ordered seven companies to remove 138 vacation rental offers in occupied territories; by February 2026, 108 of those ads had been withdrawn from six of the seven platforms. In February 2026, the ministry again demanded that six different platforms take down more than 100 similar listings. Despite those earlier actions, the ministry found that platforms continued to publish new ads, prompting the latest investigation and requirement.

Broader measures

The September 2025 decree includes a package of restrictions beyond advertising. It prohibits the transit through Spanish ports of ships carrying fuel destined for the Israeli armed forces, bars state aircraft transporting defense material to Israel from entering Spanish airspace, and denies entry to individuals directly participating in the genocide. The decree also bans imports of products from settlements and requires the government to report quarterly to Congress on its implementation. In February 2026, a coalition of NGOs filed a complaint against Edreams Odigeo for facilitating tourism in occupied territories, after identifying 43 listings in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Syrian Golan.

What comes next

The ministry has not disclosed the names of the five platforms, as was the case in previous rounds. If the companies do not remove the identified ads in Spain, they could face subsequent proceedings. The government frames the action as part of its effort to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian population affected by the conflict in Gaza. The repeated rounds of enforcement suggest that the ministry intends to maintain pressure on platforms that continue to list properties in settlements, though the effectiveness of the warnings will depend on whether the companies permanently block such listings or simply remove them temporarily.
