Debutants establish opening advantage

After both men fended off two further break points in the eighth and ninth games, Tabilo converted a 15-40 chance in the eleventh game and served out the set in 55 minutes. Merida turned the momentum in the second set by saving two break points in the opening game, eventually breaking Tabilo at 15-40 in the eighth game to level the match 6-3. In the deciding set, Merida missed two early break opportunities before converting a 0-40 opening in the third game, pulling ahead 3-1 and breaking once more at 5-3 to complete the victory.

Jodar dominates Garin in straight sets

Rafa Jodar followed with a dominant performance against Cristian Garin, securing Spain's second point with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in just one hour and four minutes. The Spanish debutant won the opening set without dropping a single game, controlling the tempo against the experienced Chilean. Garin was unable to disrupt Jodar's rhythm on the Santiago clay, allowing the visitor to close out the second set with two service breaks. The win completed an unbeaten opening day for Ferrer's selections and placed Massu's home record under severe pressure. Chile had not faced a 2-0 deficit on home soil during Massu's entire tenure as captain.

Sunday schedule and qualification stakes

The qualifying tie will conclude on Sunday with three matches scheduled on the outdoor clay at the Estadio Nacional. The action begins with the doubles rubber, where Tomas Barrios Vera and Alejandro Tabilo will take on the Spanish pairing of Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar. Following the doubles, the reverse singles will see Tabilo face Jodar in the fourth rubber, while Garin is scheduled to play Merida in the final match. Spain needs only one victory from the three Sunday contests to secure advancement to the eight-team finals in Bologna.
