
SpaceX commits $100 billion to build Starbase launch complex in Louisiana
SpaceX announced a $100 billion plan to build a 125,000-acre Starship spaceport in southern Louisiana, aiming to begin construction in 2027 and launch in 2029.

SpaceX announced on Tuesday a $100 billion investment to build a dedicated Starship spaceport in southern Louisiana. The project, named Starbase Louisiana, spans 125,000 acres of coastal marshland in Vermilion Parish near Abbeville, a town of roughly 12,000 residents. The site will feature five launch complexes containing two pads each, on-site propellant production facilities for methane fuel, dedicated power generation, deep-water shipping access, vehicle processing centers, an airport, and residential housing for staff and families. Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX president and chief operating officer, joined Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry at an announcement event in Abbeville. Landry compared the investment to the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, stating that the project will open extensive economic opportunities for the state.

Construction schedule and launch frequency
Construction on the Louisiana facility is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first Starship launch targeted for 2029. The site is designed to accommodate thousands of launches annually, supporting Elon Musk's long-term projection of exceeding 30 Starship flights per day. That operational cadence aligns with federal targets, following Federal Aviation Administration initiatives announced in August 2026 to prepare national infrastructure for 10,000 annual rocket launches. Musk stated that the facility will become the largest launch site on Earth, enabling routine orbital travel. Through August 2026, Starship has flown twice this year.

Land area and orbital trajectory advantages
The 125,000-acre site provides SpaceX with significantly more territory than its 350-acre Starbase facility in southern Texas, where the company operates one launch pad and is building a second. SpaceX also conducts launches from government-owned sites at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and Kennedy Space Center in Florida, as well as Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, with three Starship pads currently under construction at Cape Canaveral. The Louisiana coast offers unrestricted range access and allows Starship to launch southward over the Gulf of Mexico into polar orbits. SpaceX plans to use these polar trajectories to deploy a constellation of up to one million data-center satellites and launch upgraded Starlink satellites into orbit.

Workforce plans and environmental measures
Shotwell stated that Starbase Louisiana will generate approximately 3,000 permanent jobs, though total employment could reach 10,000 workers based on operational patterns in Texas. SpaceX plans to draw between 60% and 80% of its workforce from local residents, replicating its Texas hiring strategy. Regional bodies, including aerospace networks around NASA's Michoud facility in New Orleans and Louisiana State University, plan to support logistics and human spaceflight health research. LSU Chancellor Jim Dalton stated that university research in metabolism and exercise science will align with the health challenges of long-duration spaceflight. The project sits in the Pecan Island area, a coastal wetland supporting waterfowl and diverse wildlife. Shotwell stated that SpaceX will construct infrastructure on a small portion of the total acreage, leaving the surrounding wetlands preserved for fishing, hunting, and boating.
