Météo-France puts Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales on orange alert for heavy rain
Météo-France issued orange warnings for rain and flooding across Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales on Sunday, forecasting up to 180 millimetres of rainfall from a storm system tracking north from Spain.
Orange alert in Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales
Météo-France placed the departments of Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales on orange vigilance for rain and flooding at 06:00 on Sunday, 4 October. The meteorological agency warned that new rainy and stormy air masses moving north from Spain into southern Languedoc-Roussillon will persist until the end of the day. Heavy precipitation is scheduled to soak both territories throughout Sunday, bringing substantial risks of localized inundations. Forecasters noted that this active rain and storm episode follows a separate disturbance that affected Hérault and Gard in the middle of the week. The alert status requires residents to monitor changing conditions closely as rainfall concentrates across the Mediterranean basin.
The storm system that affected northeastern Spain on Saturday is moving north to impact Pyrénées-Orientales and Aude. Rain bands are setting up and will water both departments throughout the day before losing intensity at the end of the day.
Storm trajectory from Spain and rainfall forecasts
Meteorological projections indicate that total rainfall across the day will reach between 80 and 120 millimetres, especially across a wide eastern half of Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales. Isolated sectors could record heavier precipitation ranging from 150 to 180 millimetres, with some projections citing localized totals reaching up to 160 millimetres. Alert levels in the Mediterranean zone shifted repeatedly over the weekend as the storm trajectory developed. Aude had been placed on orange vigilance on Saturday morning, was downgraded to yellow alert at midday, and was raised back to orange on Sunday morning. The most intense rainfall is forecast to continue through the middle of Sunday afternoon before losing intensity as evening approaches.

Broader national weather patterns for Sunday
Weather conditions across France show a distinct regional contrast between the disturbed Mediterranean south and the rest of the country. Moderate showers will affect the remainder of the Occitanie region, while veiled skies will cover the southern half of France up to Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Alsace. A few scattered afternoon showers are predicted near the German border and in the Alps. In contrast, the northern half of France will enjoy sunny conditions, with mild to warm weather prevailing from regions such as Pays de la Loire. National temperatures will average approximately 25 degrees Celsius, providing mild conditions across most areas outside the storm-affected Languedoc-Roussillon corridor.
