Sosnowiec City Council names 3.7-hectare Zagórze park after late lawmaker Łukasz Litewka

Unanimous municipal vote

The Sosnowiec City Council voted unanimously on 27 August 2026 to name a newly developing municipal park after the late parliamentarian and activist Łukasz Litewka. The resolution formalises an initiative first introduced across council factions in June, following initial municipal visualisations unveiled in May. Sosnowiec Mayor Arkadiusz Chęciński announced the council decision on social media, confirming that city authorities had previously consulted the project directly with Litewka's parents. The family gave full support to naming the recreational space along ul. Białostocka in the Zagórze district in memory of their son. Chęciński explained the consultation process and the council's decision in an official statement.

Łukasz Litewka will become the patron of the park being created on Białostocka Street. During today's City Council session, councillors supported the draft resolution on this matter. It is worth emphasising here that the initiative was consulted with Łukasz's family. In this matter, I met with his parents, who supported the idea.

Green space and infrastructure plans

The new green area covers approximately 3.7 hectares and extends for nearly 700 metres between ul. Białostocka and ul. Lenartowicza. Construction work is managed by the Municipal Utility Services Enterprise on land situated adjacent to a tram line commissioned in late 2022. The central feature of the park is an urban fruit orchard covering roughly 45 ares, planted with sawtoothed cherry, pear, apple, and mulberry trees. Landscapers will also plant diverse flower meadows spanning more than 5,300 square metres alongside water-permeable walking alleys and designated graffiti zones. Anna Jedynak-Rykała, the chairwoman of the Sosnowiec City Council, outlined the recreational amenities planned for local residents.

It will be a roller skating track with an area of over 5,000 square metres. It is a 1.3-kilometre loop that allows two-way riding. Of course, there will be benches, bins, and a chillout zone with city deckchairs. The alleys will be illuminated.

Project timeline and construction

The development site in the Zagórze district had been earmarked for transit and recreational use for several years before active construction began. Municipal authorities first announced plans for the park in July 2025 before releasing visual renderings in May 2026 as initial groundworks commenced. The park borders thousands of residential properties in Zagórze, providing a green buffer along the modernised public transport corridor. Physical construction continues through the municipal enterprise, with completion scheduled in phases across the 3.7-hectare corridor.

Circumstances of the fatal collision

Łukasz Litewka died at the age of 36 following a road collision on 23 April 2026 on ul. Kazimierzowska in neighbouring Dąbrowa Górnicza. The Lewica lawmaker was cycling on the roadway when a Mitsubishi passenger car crossed into his path and struck him. Despite an hour of resuscitation efforts at the scene, Litewka succumbed to his injuries. Prosecutors charged the 57-year-old motorist, identified as Sławomir K., with causing a fatal traffic accident through unintentional road traffic violations. The suspect was released from custody after posting 40,000 PLN bail, following a decision by the Regional Court in Sosnowiec that rejected the prosecution's motion for pre-trial detention. Under Polish law, the charges carry a potential prison sentence of six months to eight years.

Public work and charity legacy

Before winning election to the Polish Sejm for Nowa Lewica, Litewka served as an active member of the Sosnowiec City Council. Litewka gained widespread public recognition for his philanthropic initiatives through his charitable organisation, the TeamLitewka foundation. The foundation raised funds for medical treatments, provided rehabilitation equipment for accident victims, and responded to local social emergencies. Litewka also established the nationwide Zwierzogranie campaign, organising pet food collections and behavioral lectures to support animal shelters and encourage adoptions.
