Sony to stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs from January 2028
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced today that it will no longer produce physical game discs for new PlayStation titles from January 2028, completing its shift to digital-only distribution.
Sony confirmed the long-expected move in a blog post on 1 July 2026, stating that the "natural direction" reflects the dominance of digital purchases and declining demand for physical media. The announcement, just days after Rockstar Games revealed that Grand Theft Auto VI will be a digital-only release, signals a permanent industry shift away from discs.
This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.
The numbers behind the decision
Digital sales made up 85% of full-game purchases on PS4 and PS5 in Sony's fiscal fourth quarter (January–March 2026), the highest share ever. Across the whole of 2025, digital accounted for 78% of unit sales. Physical spending in the US collapsed to roughly $1.5 billion in 2025, the lowest since 1995, according to Circana. Globally, digital distribution already represents around 95% of game sales.
What the change means for players
Games released before January 2028 will remain available on disc, and titles already planned for physical release will still appear in stores. After that date, new PS5 (and likely future consoles) games will be sold only as digital downloads from the PlayStation Store or as download-code-in-a-box at retailers. Sony insists the transition will align the platform with how most users already access content, but critics warn it erodes consumer rights.
It's a body blow to consumer rights. It's of huge concern for game conservation and a massive problem for gamers with lower disposable incomes who rely on part-exchanging or loaning games from friends to keep up with the AAA price tags.
A console generation that turned digital
The decision follows a trail of signals: the PS5 launched in 2020 with an optional disc-free version, the PS5 Pro in 2024 omitted a disc drive entirely, and Rockstar's GTA VI pre-orders at the end of June 2026 confirmed a code-in-a-box instead of a disc. Sony's own earlier mockery of Xbox's restrictions on game sharing now contrasts sharply with a future where players cannot lend, trade, or own a permanent copy.
- PS5 launches with an optional digital edition, offering a disc-free console for the first time.
- PS5 Pro arrives exclusively as a digital console, requiring a separate disc drive.
- Physical game spending in the US hits a 30-year low of about $1.5 billion, per Circana.
- Sony reports 85% digital full-game sales share in Q4 FY2025, the highest on record.
- Rockstar confirms Grand Theft Auto VI will be digital-only, with no disc in physical boxes.
- Sony announces the end of physical disc production from January 2028 and planned PS3/Vita store closures.
- PS3 and PS Vita store shutdowns begin in selected markets.
- US PlayStation Stores for PS3 and Vita close.
- Production of new PlayStation game discs ends; all new releases go digital-only.
Legacy storefronts also closing
Sony separately announced that the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will begin shutting down, starting in August 2026 in some markets and extending to July 2027 in the United States. Purchased content will remain downloadable "for the foreseeable future," the company said, but new purchases will end.
