New York Knicks win first NBA title in 53 years as Jeremy Sochan becomes first Polish champion
The New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5, winning the 2026 NBA Finals 4-1 and securing their first championship since 1973. Jeremy Sochan became the first Polish player to earn an NBA ring.
Road to the Finals
Jeremy Sochan began the season with San Antonio but the Spurs released him in February, clearing the way for a move to New York. Though his playing time was limited, the 23-year-old’s insight into his former teammates proved valuable. He had spent three and a half seasons with the Spurs after being drafted ninth overall in 2022, and he made it clear he knew Victor Wembanyama’s weaknesses.
Regardless of whether I play or not, it's important to me to pass on all the information I have.
Sochan’s disruptive presence
Sochan did everything possible to unnerve Wembanyama during the series. He collided with the French star during a timeout in Game 3, exchanged words, and used small gestures to throw him off rhythm. Head coach Mike Brown praised Sochan’s readiness, noting that despite playing less than a minute in most games, he could enter the floor and deliver several solid minutes defensively.
Look at Sochan. I don't even remember when he played more than 30 seconds, and he can come onto the court and give a few good minutes. That's a great skill — to maintain a good attitude and be in constant readiness.
Historic comebacks and Game 5
New York had already authored the largest comeback in NBA Finals history in Game 4, erasing a 29-point deficit to win 107-106 on an OG Anunoby put-back with 1.2 seconds remaining. In the decisive Game 5 in Texas, the Knicks again fell behind early. San Antonio led 23-13 after the first quarter and held advantages of 28:13, 53:41, 68:53 and 83:73. Jalen Brunson took over, scoring 45 points, nearly half of New York’s total. The Knicks tightened defensively down the stretch, and Wembanyama, who finished with 19 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists, missed crucial late shots. Sochan entered in the closing seconds to deny Wembanyama the ball.
I have no words. This is everything I dreamed of. When everyone writes us off, we find a way to win.
Celebration and reactions
In the locker room, Sochan celebrated by eating a piece of meat, smoking a cigar, and partying with actor and Knicks fan Timothée Chalamet. Wembanyama was dejected after the final buzzer and spoke bluntly about the long road back.
I’m angry about the fact that we probably have about 100 games before we return to the Finals. I need to slow down, wait, and consistently follow my plan through those games. This is the biggest lesson of my life. I can’t yet say exactly what the lesson is, but we’re learning.
What’s next
Sochan becomes the first Polish player with an NBA championship ring. The only previous Pole to reach the Finals was Marcin Gortat, whose Orlando Magic lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009. The Knicks, who last won the title in 1973, had waited 53 years for this moment and won all four playoff series-clinching games on the road.
