The sentence
US District Judge Orlando Garcia sentenced Rigoberto Ramón Miranda Orozco to 30 years in prison on Tuesday, 20 October, for his part in a smuggling operation that left 53 migrants dead inside a truck trailer in June 2022. Europa Press and Al Jazeera give his age as 39, 20 Minutes gives 49 and NOS gives 50. On 2 July he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to bring a foreign national into the United States resulting in death, and he also admitted complicity in the same conduct, which resulted in death and serious bodily injury. Court documents cited by the US Department of Justice say he conspired with other smugglers to move migrants from Guatemala through Mexico into the United States, and that he admitted organising their transport and lodging along the route. He was arrested in Guatemala in August 2024 and extradited to the United States in March 2025, a process the Justice Department credited to Guatemalan authorities, including the Attorney General's Office and its anti-trafficking unit.
What happened inside the trailer
According to investigators cited by Europa Press, the truck was carrying 64 people when it covered more than 250 kilometres from Laredo to San Antonio, Texas. Its air conditioning was not working and the outside temperature was above 32 degrees Celsius. Emergency teams declared 48 people dead inside the vehicle after it reached San Antonio, and five more died later in hospital, bringing the toll to 53. NOS reports that 16 migrants were taken to hospitals, five of whom later died, and that the migrants paid up to 15,000 dollars each for the crossing. Europa Press puts the number of minors among the dead at six, and Al Jazeera adds that a pregnant woman was among them. Notícias Ao Minuto and 20 Minutes report that 11 people survived. According to Notícias Ao Minuto, prosecutor Justin Simmons told reporters after the sentencing that investigators found clothing the passengers had removed in an effort to cool down, along with fingernail marks on the trailer walls, which he said showed people trying to force their way out.
The defence and the wider case
Miranda Orozco's lawyer, Alfonso Cabanas Jr., described the sentence as very severe. Cabanas said his client was in Guatemala at the time, had no control over the type of vehicle used, and did not know the air conditioning had failed. He also argued that harsh sentences achieve little and that immigration reform is what is needed, according to NOS. Other defendants are still waiting for their sentences. Al Jazeera, citing the Associated Press, counts nearly 20 people sentenced in the United States and Guatemala in connection with the tragedy. Felipe Orduna-Torres, a leading figure in the US side of the operation, received a life sentence in June 2025, while Armando Gonzales-Ortega, described by prosecutors as Orduna-Torres's main aide, got 83 years. NOS reports that two defendants received life and 83-year terms in 2025, and notes that thousands of migrants have died over recent decades trying to cross the Mexico-US border.
