Canadian skyrunner Kalie McCrystal goes missing during Matterhorn record training run

Disappearance during alpine training

Canadian skyrunner Kalie McCrystal, 38, from Squamish, British Columbia, went missing during a reconnaissance run on the Italian side of the Matterhorn. McCrystal was preparing for a record attempt on the 4,478-meter peak in the Pennine Alps along the Swiss-Italian border. She planned to ascend via the Lion Ridge and complete the descent in under five hours. Her last confirmed contact occurred on Tuesday, September 1, when she took a photograph above the Jean-Antoine Carrel refuge at approximately 3,830 meters altitude. During the ascent, she spoke with a mountain guide, explaining that she was training to set a speed record on the route.

Search and rescue operations

The Aosta Valley Alpine Rescue Service and Cervinia police initiated aerial and ground searches along the Italian normal route. Ground teams swept the mountain slopes on Thursday, deploying helicopters and Recco detection technology designed to locate mountain equipment. Search coordinators deployed a smaller helicopter to navigate narrower rock faces and look into ravines, though aerial sweeps produced no sightings of the missing runner. Rescuers noted that McCrystal was wearing shorts, a trail-running backpack, and a white jacket, which blends into the surrounding rock and snow fields, complicating visual searches.

Valerio Segor of the regional mountain rescue service described the tactical adjustments during aerial operations:

We switched to a much smaller helicopter, capable of getting closer to the cliffs and seeing into the ravines. But they saw nothing.

Athletic background and previous ascents

McCrystal is an experienced mountaineer and distance athlete with previous experience on the Matterhorn. On August 14, she completed a solo round trip on the Swiss side across the Hörnli Ridge from Zermatt in 6 hours, 47 minutes, and 33 seconds, according to the Fastest Known Time database. In February, she won the 4 Refugios Non-Stop race in Bariloche, Argentina, covering the nearly 40-kilometer route with 3,350 meters of peak elevation in 6 hours, 21 minutes, and 10 seconds. The Lion Ridge route on the Italian face is considered more technical and demanding than the Swiss Hörnli route, while drawing fewer climbers.

Athletics Canada issued a statement confirming her background in high-altitude environments:

Kalie is an experienced skyrunner and mountaineer, with many years of experience in technical and high-altitude mountain environments. She has extensive knowledge and experience of alpine terrain and had previously climbed the Matterhorn. This was therefore not her first ascent of the mountain.

Coordination with authorities

Family members and close friends continue to coordinate with Italian authorities while attempting to track cellular location data. Her friend Amelia Boultbee noted that McCrystal's phone ceased receiving messages, prompting appeals for information from anyone who encountered her between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Search teams have analyzed cellular signals, but attempts to pinpoint her device have not yielded coordinates. McCrystal's family remains in active communication with Italian rescue services as search efforts continue across the southern slopes of the peak.
