Stellan Skarsgård turns 75: Career peaks with Golden Globe, first Oscar nod, and self-deprecating 'nepo daddy' charm
The Swedish actor known for Dune and Mamma Mia! celebrates his 75th birthday on 13 June 2026, fresh from his first Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win for Sentimental Value.
A six-decade career
Stellan Skarsgård marks his 75th birthday as one of Sweden's most internationally sought-after actors. His filmography spans roughly 150 titles, from European art-house classics to Hollywood blockbusters. At Stockholm's Arlanda airport, a giant photograph of Skarsgård greets arriving passengers, placing him among the country's most famous exports. The actor himself jokes that some of those films were "very short," but the range is undeniable.

From teen idol to Hollywood veteran
Skarsgård broke out as a teenager in the Swedish television series 'Bombi Bitt och jag', becoming an instant heartthrob. He left school at 17 to pursue acting and soon crossed into international cinema with roles in 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being' (1988) and 'The Hunt for Red October' (1990). Over the decades he appeared opposite Tom Hanks in 'Illuminati' (2009), with Matt Damon in 'Good Will Hunting' (1997), and before mass audiences in 'Mamma Mia!' (2008), 'The Physician' (2013) and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. More recently he shared the screen with Timothée Chalamet in the two-part 'Dune' (2021–2024) and anchored the Star Wars series 'Andor' (2022–2025).
'Sentimental Value' and late-career glory
The Norwegian drama 'Sentimental Value' (2025), directed by Joachim Trier, brought Skarsgård his richest critical acclaim. He plays a filmmaker estranged from his children—a role that earned him a Golden Globe in January 2026, the European Film Award, and his first-ever Oscar nomination. Accepting the Globe, he quipped,
The industry clearly disagreed. Yet in a late-2025 discussion with his son Alexander on 'Actors on Actors', Skarsgård confessed a fear of being typecast, noting that most scripts offered to him now involve dementia or Alzheimer's patients—roles he is not ready to play.I thought I was too old.
'Nepo daddy' and a sprawling family
Five of Skarsgård's eight children followed him into acting, including his eldest son Alexander. During an 'Actors on Actors' conversation, Alexander teased his father's unconventional style, recalling childhood wishes:
Stellan Skarsgård has embraced the inversion of fame, jokingly calling himself a "nepo daddy" on Stephen Colbert's show—someone who benefits from his children's celebrity. After eight children with two women, Skarsgård has said he opted for sterilisation. He now lives with his second wife, the American Megan Everett, 25 years his junior, in Stockholm's Södermalm district.Wear a suit, damn it! Instead of your weird hippie sarongs—or nothing at all.
Health and humour
A stroke several years ago affected Skarsgård's memory, making it harder to recall names and follow conversations. He now relies on an earpiece prompter for his lines. He has not lost his wit, however, and in interviews he projects a grounded, unbothered air—a trait he attributes partly to the Swedish custom of leaving people alone. Even with his address easily found online, he says, his neighbours do not pester him.
