Suspected attack plot in Sarcelles: six men indicted, no established link to a terrorist project
Six men were presented to a judge in Paris on 25 July after weapons were found in a car in Sarcelles on 11 July. The national antiterrorism prosecutor has sought their indictment on organised-crime charges, while investigations into the alleged attack plot continue.
Weapons discovery and evacuation
A car containing an assault rifle, a pistol and ammunition magazines was discovered on the evening of 11 July 2026 in Sarcelles, a town of 60,000 inhabitants north of Paris. The vehicle was found near a cinema and about 500 metres from a synagogue. Around 300 people in the vicinity were evacuated at approximately 21:30 while a bomb-disposal operation was carried out. No explosives were found.
The discovery followed a tip received by the Direction générale de la sécurité intérieure (DGSI), France's domestic intelligence service, about a "possible Islamist attack targeting a synagogue in Sarcelles."
Six men presented to the court
On Saturday 25 July, six men were presented to the court in Paris as part of a judicial investigation opened for criminal terrorist conspiracy. The Parquet national antiterroriste (Pnat) stated that they are suspected of having taken part in transporting the vehicle found in Sarcelles, or of having helped supply or deliver the weapons.
The prosecutor's office noted that the investigation has not established, "at this stage," that the six men were aware of any terrorist project. The Pnat has requested their indictment for organised gang theft, organised gang receiving of stolen goods, and criminal and misdemeanour conspiracy, along with pre-trial detention.

Calls for caution over the target
In the days following the discovery, several sources close to the investigation urged caution about the nature of the suspected plot. A source told AFP that investigators had simply identified "a nice little team involved in arms trafficking and vehicle theft" and that "nothing is very certain" regarding the intended target.
It would be regrettable to prematurely attribute this event to an antisemitic target if the investigations were ultimately to establish a completely different reality.
Moïse Kahloun, president of the Jewish community of Sarcelles, stressed on 12 July that there was "at this stage, no element that makes it possible to establish a direct link with the Jewish community." He pointed out that a cinema had been evacuated but not the synagogue.
Ongoing investigation
With the opening of the judicial investigation, the Pnat indicated that inquiries are continuing against "unidentified persons concerning offences of a terrorist nature." The investigation is particularly aimed at identifying "the sponsors of the delivery of the Toyota vehicle" and at "clarifying the violent action project that was reported." The wider counterterrorism dimension of the case remains open.
