Athens traffic faces severe delays after six-car pile-up on Kifisos Avenue
A six-vehicle collision at Treis Gefyres on Thursday morning caused heavy tailbacks on Kifisos Avenue and delays of up to 30 minutes on Attiki Odos.
Collision at Treis Gefyres on Kifisos Avenue
Early on the morning of Thursday, 1 October 2026, a collision involving six passenger cars occurred on the southbound carriageway of Kifisos Avenue in Athens. The multi-vehicle crash took place at the height of Treis Gefyres, immediately halting the flow of vehicles along the primary north-south transit spine of the Attica basin. Emergency services and traffic management units arrived at the scene to assist the involved drivers and begin clearing the obstructed lanes. The incident created immediate bottlenecks, forcing following vehicles to proceed at very low speeds across the affected stretch. Motorists were advised to show particular caution when approaching the area. At the time of initial morning reports, authorities had not confirmed whether any individuals suffered injuries in the collision.
Southbound tailbacks from the Olympic Village to Peristeri
The obstruction at Treis Gefyres rapidly developed into extensive vehicular tailbacks across the northern sections of the Athens metropolitan area. Southbound congestion originated far upstream from Metamorfosi, eventually reaching as far back as the Olympic Village bridge and the district of Kifisia. The continuous queue of stationary and slow-moving vehicles extended over several kilometres, continuing past the crash location at Treis Gefyres and stretching downstream to Peristeri. Commuters faced prolonged travel times throughout the morning rush, with the highway corridor effectively transformed into a slow-moving queue. Traffic flow along this entire section remained heavily burdened for hours as vehicles queued across all southbound lanes.

Northbound congestion and central Athens corridors
Travel conditions deteriorated on the northbound carriageway of Kifisos Avenue as well, creating simultaneous difficulties in both directions of travel. Northbound tailbacks stretched continuously from the KTEL intercity bus terminal area and Egaleo up to Nea Filadelfeia and Metamorfosi. As drivers attempted to divert around the highway congestion, secondary arterial roads across central Athens absorbed substantial additional traffic. Heavy vehicle volumes developed on Kifisias Avenue throughout the morning hours. In the city centre, both directions of Vasilissis Sofias Avenue and Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue experienced heavy congestion and slow transit speeds.
Widespread delays across the Attiki Odos network
The traffic disruption on Kifisos Avenue generated knock-on delays across key segments of the Attiki Odos orbital motorway network. On the carriageway heading towards Athens International Airport, motorists experienced delays of 25 to 30 minutes between the Fyli junction and the Kifisias Avenue interchange. An additional delay of 5 to 10 minutes occurred at the airport-bound exit ramp connecting drivers to the national highway towards Lamia. On the opposite side of the motorway heading westbound towards Elefsina, vehicles attempting to access the Lamia exit encountered delays of 5 to 10 minutes. Overall travel times across central and orbital routes in Attica remained severely elevated throughout the early morning period.
