Sina Frei wins cross-country gold at Mountain Bike World Championships in Val di Sole

Dominant solo ride in Val di Sole

Swiss mountain biker Sina Frei won the gold medal in the women's cross-country race at the Mountain Bike World Championships in Val di Sole on 30 August 2026. The 29-year-old rider from Uetikon am See dominated the competition from the early stages, spending the vast majority of the race riding entirely alone at the front of the field. Frei, who entered the competition as the reigning European cross-country champion, built a commanding advantage over the chasing group. Her decisive breakaway developed after Swedish co-favourite Jenny Rissveds suffered an early mechanical defect. Frei pulled away from all other competitors following Rissveds' breakdown, navigating the course in Italy with composure to finish with a large lead and claim the world title.

Sprint finish for silver and bronze

The battle for the remaining medal positions stayed unresolved until the final metres of the race. Local Italian rider Martina Berta competed directly against 29-year-old Swiss athlete Nicole Koller in a direct duel for second place. In the final sprint to the line, Berta defeated Koller to take the silver medal in front of the home crowd in Val di Sole. Koller crossed the finish line in third place to secure the bronze medal. The result delivered two podium finishes for the Swiss team in the premier cross-country event, alongside Frei's gold medal.

Mechanical setbacks for Keller and Rissveds

The competition unfolded in a far less fortunate manner for Swiss co-favourite Alessandra Keller, who fell out of the medal fight due to two separate technical failures. Keller encountered problems with her bike chain during an opening downhill section, but she managed to stay in touch with the lead group during the initial laps. Approximately half an hour into the race, her chain caused problems for a second time. Visibly frustrated by the recurring equipment failure, Keller threw her water bottle away on the track and continued riding in tears as her podium hopes disappeared. Swedish contender Jenny Rissveds was also eliminated from the medal contest after experiencing material problems during the race.

Swiss cross-country championship history

Frei became the third Swiss woman in mountain biking history to win the world championship in the premier cross-country category. Her victory places her alongside Silvia Fürst, who won the world title in 1992, and Jolanda Neff, who became world champion in 2017. The gold medal in Val di Sole adds to Frei's international achievements, which include an Olympic silver medal won in 2021 as well as a short track world championship title earned in that same year. Following the conclusion of the women's cross-country race, attention turned to the men's world championship event scheduled for 15:15, where Swiss medal prospects were assessed as lower.
