Swiss police classify Aarau techno rave shooting as indiscriminate rampage

Attack at the Schachen racecourse

In the early hours of Sunday, a gunman approached the Schachen racecourse in Aarau where an annual techno festival was concluding, parking his car along Schachenstrasse before moving on foot toward the venue perimeter. More than 100 people were still present on the festival grounds when the shooter opened fire into the crowd with an AK-74 assault rifle, changing his firing position and direction multiple times. The shooter discharged more than 40 rounds, killing a 22-year-old Italian woman and wounding six others. Five victims, consisting of four Swiss men and one German woman aged between 24 and 31, suffered injuries ranging from minor to serious, while a sixth victim reported a ricochet injury to authorities on Monday. After the barrage, the shooter returned to his vehicle, fired multiple pistol shots at a departing car, and fled the area.

Surrender and weapon recovery

Swiss law enforcement initiated an extensive search operation that included collaboration with German authorities in Baden-Württemberg, roughly 25 kilometres north of Aarau. Witness statements identified a getaway car carrying registration plates from Canton Jura, allowing investigators to filter down more than 100 potential vehicles using video recordings. In the night leading into Monday, the 43-year-old Swiss suspect drove directly to the cantonal police station in Delémont and surrendered to officers. Inside the vehicle, police retrieved three firearms registered in the suspect's name: two pistols and an AK-74 Kalashnikov assault rifle. Initial forensic tests on spent cartridge casings from the racecourse matched the weapons recovered from the car boot.

Investigation and lack of ideological motive

Cantonal authorities presented their initial findings at a media briefing on Wednesday afternoon, classifying the event as an indiscriminate lone-actor shooting rampage. The suspect admitted responsibility upon surrendering but exercised his right to remain silent during formal interrogation. Lead prosecutor Christoph Rüedi noted that the suspect mentioned suffering from persistent psychological problems.

We have no confirmed findings regarding his motive.

Police commander Michael Leupold stated that the suspect purchased and registered all three weapons legally 20 years ago under older regulatory standards. The suspect had no criminal history beyond minor traffic infractions and had completed Swiss army service as a cook, formally ending conscription duty in 2013 and returning his army-issued rifle at that time. Investigators found no evidence linking the suspect to right-wing, left-wing, or Islamist extremism.

Community response and scheduled events

The racecourse venue operator, the Aargauischer Rennverein, announced on Wednesday that its scheduled horse racing event will take place on Sunday with adjusted security measures following consultations with cantonal police. In contrast, the Cancer League of Aargau cancelled a charity run scheduled for Thursday at the same site. As of Wednesday afternoon, two injured victims remain under treatment in local hospitals. The Lenzburg-Aarau public prosecutor's office is conducting the criminal investigation as the suspect remains in custody.
