Sharks edge Leinster 26-20 in Durban as Lions beat Ospreys 35-19
Defending champions Leinster left Durban with a single losing bonus point after a 26-20 loss to the Sharks, while the Lions scored six tries to beat Ospreys 35-19 in Johannesburg.
Sharks secure bonus-point win over Leinster in Durban
Defending United Rugby Championship titleholders Leinster ended their two-match tour of South Africa with a 26-20 defeat against the Sharks in Durban on 3 October 2026. Leo Cullen's team left Kings Park with a single losing bonus point, following a two-point haul from their defeat to the Lions the previous week. The Sharks pack was bolstered by the return of Springbok forwards Eben Etzebeth, Ox Nche, and Thomas du Toit. The hosts established early authority at the set piece, with Vincent Koch and du Toit leading the scrum battle against the Irish province.
Leinster opened the scoring in the 16th minute after a succession of forward drives inside the Sharks 22 enabled scrum-half Fintan Gunne to feed centre Robbie Henshaw for a converted try. The Sharks equalised nine minutes later when repeated scrum penalties provided scrum-half Jaden Hendrikse with quick possession, allowing flanker Manu Tshituka to cross the line. Four minutes before the interval, Leinster tighthead prop Thomas Clarkson received a yellow card for repeated scrum collapses. The Sharks capitalised immediately, spreading play through full-back Luan Giliomee for left wing Lili Bester to score in the corner, with Vusi Moyo adding the touchline conversion on the half-time hooter for a 14-7 lead.
Second-half momentum and late bonus point
Clarkson responded moments after returning from the sin bin at the start of the second half, powering over the line for Leinster's second try. Although the conversion attempt from Gabriel struck the upright, a subsequent penalty from fly-half Sam Prendergast moved Leinster briefly into the lead. The Sharks countered decisively through back-to-back tries. Centre Andre Estherhuizen completed a counter-attack, before wing Edwill van der Merwe intercepted a Leinster pass to extend the South African side's advantage.

Leinster salvaged a bonus point in the closing stages when wing Andrew Osborne collected a kick from Prendergast to touch down in the corner, leaving the final score at 26-20. The result leaves Leinster departing South Africa with three competition points across two tour matches.
Lions dominate second half against Ospreys
Earlier on Saturday at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, the Lions recorded a 35-19 victory over Welsh region Ospreys. Mark Jones's Ospreys led 12-10 at half-time after tries from Keiran Williams and Efan Daniel, alongside two conversions from Edwards, countered an opening score from Lions back Erich Cronje.

The Lions seized control after the restart, using set-piece dominance to secure their four-try bonus point before the hour mark through scores from PJ Botha, Morne Brandon, and Boeta Chamberlain. Kelly Mpeku added two tries for the home side, while Ross Moriarty scored with the final play for Ospreys. Lions fly-half Chris Smith converted one try and kicked a penalty. The Ospreys, who earned a four-try bonus point in their opening round defeat to the Sharks, leave Johannesburg without a point and face Dragons at Rodney Parade on Friday, 9 October.
Commercial naming deals at South African venues
Both fixtures took place at venues featuring recent betting company naming partnerships. The Sharks' ground has operated commercially as Hollywoodbets Kings Park since 2023, while Ellis Park entered an agreement in July to become 10Bet Ellis Park. Academic researcher Darragh McGee described such gambling-themed franchise titles as unprecedented in the world of sport, in contrast to European rugby where betting sponsorships have been limited to selective kit and competition partnerships.
