Police brace for traffic chaos as AfD youth rally and six counter-protests descend on Schwerin
A planned rally by the AfD's youth wing Generation Deutschland with 500 attendees and six counter-demonstrations will disrupt traffic in central Schwerin from around 2 pm, police said.
Traffic disruptions and police presence
Police in Schwerin have warned of significant traffic restrictions in the city centre as a rally by the AfD youth organisation Generation Deutschland and multiple counter-demonstrations are set to take place on Friday afternoon. A heavy police presence was already visible on Friday morning, with patrol vehicles arriving from other federal states to support local forces. Authorities expect participants from both sides to travel from across Germany, raising the likelihood of congestion and temporary road closures.
From around 2 pm, these will particularly affect the area of Werderstraße from the junction of Großer Moor to the Graf-Schack-Allee at the corner of Geschwister-Scholl-Straße.
The affected section stretches through the heart of Schwerin's inner city, close to key landmarks. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and expect delays on public transport routes that cross the perimeter.
AfD youth rally
Generation Deutschland, the youth arm of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland party, has registered a rally under the title "Tag der Deutschen Jugend" (Day of the German Youth) for the afternoon. The gathering is scheduled to take place on the Alter Garten, the central square in the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with 500 registered participants. Following the rally, the organisation plans a march through the city, according to police. The event is seen as a significant mobilisation by the AfD's younger wing, bringing together members and supporters from across the country.
Counter-demonstrations
Six separate counter-demonstrations have been registered, one of which is planned at the Siegessäule (Victory Column) on the Alter Garten, in immediate proximity to the AfD event. The proximity of the opposing demonstrations raises the potential for clashes, though police have not indicated any specific threat. The counter-protests are expected to draw a comparable number of attendees, though exact figures have not been released by organisers or authorities.
A total of seven demonstrations, one by Generation Deutschland and six opposing gatherings, will compete for space and visibility in the narrow streets around the Alter Garten. Police have not disclosed the full list of counter-demo organisers or their specific demands.
Speakers
Several prominent AfD figures are scheduled to address the "Tag der Deutschen Jugend" rally. The lineup includes the two AfD state chairmen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Leif-Erik Holm and Enrico Schult, as well as the federal chairman of Generation Deutschland, Jean-Pascal Hohm. Alexander Tschich, the organisation's state chairman in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, will also speak. The presence of multiple senior party figures indicates the rally's importance to the AfD's broader mobilisation strategy, though the event remains a local one in Schwerin.
The programme is expected to begin in the early afternoon, shortly after the 2 pm traffic restrictions come into force.
