Italian police arrest seven suspects in 2019 Rome murder of Lazio ultras leader Diabolik

Anti-mafia operation in the Italian capital

During the early morning hours of 9 September 2026, Italian police officers from the Squadra Mobile and Carabinieri from the Nucleo Investigativo executed pre-trial detention orders against seven suspects linked to the 2019 killing of Fabrizio Piscitelli. Piscitelli, known by the alias Diabolik, was the former leader of SS Lazio's Irriducibili ultras group and an active narcotics trafficker in Rome. The pre-trial detention orders were issued by the preliminary investigation judge of the Rome Court upon the request of the Direzione Distrettuale Antimafia. Prosecutors charged the suspects with aggravated murder carried out with mafia methods, extortion involving military-grade weapons, attempted murder, and criminal association aimed at narcotics trafficking.

Clan hierarchy and financial disputes

Investigative findings identified Michele Senese, the long-standing head of the Senese clan, as the top instigator who gave the decisive prior authorization to kill Piscitelli. Senese, who is already detained in prison under Italy's 41-bis regime in connection with other proceedings, approved the punitive action to enforce clan authority over a subordinate operative. Judicial findings show that Piscitelli had established an autonomous drug distribution enterprise with Fabrizio Fabietti, refusing to transfer the required share of criminal profits to the Senese syndicate. Despite distributing large volumes of narcotics across Rome, Piscitelli paid only monthly sums of roughly 2,000 to 3,000 euros, never providing more than 3,000 euros.

Planning and the Parco degli Acquedotti ambush

The operational coordination of the attack was organized by Leandro Bennato, who directed criminal activities between Tor Bella Monaca in southeastern Rome and Casalotti and Primavalle in the northwest. Bennato, who is also held under the 41-bis regime, sought to eliminate Piscitelli to remove a competitor in the cocaine market and gain control of the Tuscolana district. Bennato conducted preliminary reconnaissance at the park and provided direct logistical support on the day of the crime by escorting the shooter on a stolen scooter. Cocaine broker Alessandro Capriotti acted as the intermediary, scheduling a fictitious meeting with Piscitelli on a park bench near the Via Lemonia entrance of Parco degli Acquedotti for 19:00 on 7 August 2019.

Execution and investigative findings

When Piscitelli arrived for the scheduled meeting, an assailant dressed as a runner approached the bench and shot him in the back of the head in broad daylight. Raul Esteban Calderon was initially accused of carrying out the shooting before being acquitted on appeal. Prosecutors reconstructed the wider conspiracy through environmental wiretaps, phone intercepts, and decrypted digital chats that revealed an agreement among multiple criminal factions to regulate narcotics distribution. The preliminary investigation judge noted in the detention order that the daylight execution generated a climate of fear, subjugation, and omerta, reflected in the reluctance of eyewitnesses and close associates of the victim to speak with law enforcement.
