Savannah serval Gustaw escapes private property in Orzysz, prompting police search in Masuria
Police in Pisz have warned residents not to approach an escaped savannah serval wearing a red harness, advising the public to call emergency services upon any sighting.
The escape in Orzysz
Police officers in the Masurian district of Pisz launched a search operation on Sunday, 4 October 2026, after receiving reports of an escaped exotic African serval in the town of Orzysz. The wild cat, named Gustaw, slipped away from a private residential property during the previous night and failed to return to its enclosure. The owner discovered the disappearance on Sunday morning and promptly notified the duty officer at the County Police Headquarters in Pisz. According to an official public alert issued by the Orzysz Town Hall, the cat was wearing a distinctive set of red leather harness gear when it broke out. Local municipal authorities and police patrols immediately began monitoring the surrounding area in an effort to locate the animal and ensure its safe return to domestic care.
Official warnings and emergency protocols
Following the notification, law enforcement officials published safety guidelines advising local residents against making any direct contact with the roaming predator. Information provided by the owner indicated that Gustaw is ordinarily a gentle animal that does not display aggressive tendencies toward humans. However, police warned that the stress of navigating an unfamiliar outdoor environment could cause the cat to become frightened and react in an unpredictable manner. Officers instructed members of the public not to corner, touch, chase, or attempt to capture the feline independently.
The serval is a rather gentle cat, but we nevertheless warn against approaching it or attempting to catch it on your own. In the event of sighting this cat, immediately call the 112 emergency number.
Authorities stressed that immediate notification via the 112 emergency line allows trained services to secure the exotic cat professionally without exposing residents or the animal to unnecessary danger.
Characteristics of the savannah serval
The savannah serval is a medium-sized wild feline native to sub-Saharan Africa, where the species primarily roams habitats covered in tall grass. Adult specimens typically stand between 50 and 90 centimetres tall at the withers and maintain a body weight ranging from 7 to 18 kilograms. The animals possess a short, sand-coloured coat patterned with dense black spots, alongside a comparatively short tail and disproportionately large, upright ears. Servals are known as agile hunters capable of executing vertical leaps of up to approximately 3 metres to ambush birds and small game in open terrain.

Under Polish environmental and municipal regulations, keeping an exotic savannah serval as a pet does not require a specialized wild-animal permit. However, national regulations mandate that every owner must formally register the presence of such an exotic cat with the local town hall or the county starosty office. In this case, the owner maintained the registered animal on private grounds in Orzysz before its overnight escape. As of Sunday afternoon, regional police units and local municipal services continue to gather information and monitor reports from the public across Pisz County. Local officials have asked residents to remain observant and disseminate the search notice widely to facilitate Gustaw's swift recovery.
