Kasper Schmeichel drives Uber to fill time following abrupt retirement from football
Former Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel revealed at an EFC assembly in Copenhagen that he is working as an Uber driver to occupy his days after double shoulder surgery forced him to retire at age 39.
New routine in retirement
Former Denmark national team goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel revealed that he is working as an Uber driver on an almost full-time basis to occupy his time following his unexpected retirement from football. Speaking at the European Football Clubs (EFC) general assembly held in Copenhagen between 28 and 30 September, the 39-year-old explained that taking up driving was not driven by financial necessity. Instead, he sought a regular activity after an abrupt physical injury brought an early close to his athletic career. Schmeichel remarked that stepping away from the daily demands of professional sport left him with a substantial surplus of open hours. He described his motivation when addressing the gathering in the Danish capital.
It is not related to a lack of financial means, but to an excess of free time after the sudden end of my career and unexpected retirement, which I did not anticipate.
Abrupt end to playing days
The goalkeeper's professional playing career came to an unexpected conclusion during the spring of 2026. On 18 March, Schmeichel announced publicly that he needed to undergo two complicated shoulder operations immediately, requiring an estimated 12 months of rehabilitation. Given the length of the recovery period and his age of 39, he chose not to return to competitive play. On 27 May, he made his retirement official while registered as a player for Scottish club Celtic Glasgow. He described the abrupt nature of the decision during his appearance in Copenhagen.
I am 39 years old, which means I will no longer play any match and that my career has come to a brutal end.

Future ambitions in football
While he spends his current routine driving for a ride-hailing company, Schmeichel plans to transition into management or football governance over the long term. He explained that he is considering a career as a coach or pursuing higher-level organizational roles inside football institutions. However, he noted that he has not yet completed the required coaching qualifications and must complete those courses before taking on formal technical roles. In the meantime, driving provides him with a structured daily routine while he prepares for his next professional chapter. He described his temporary situation when discussing his schedule.
Unfortunately, I have not completed coaching courses, so I have to take care of that. For now, as an early retiree, I have too much free time, so to kill it, I drive as an Uber driver almost full-time.
Career spanning two decades
Schmeichel's retirement in May 2026 closed a career that began more than two decades earlier in English football. He started his professional path at Manchester United, where he was on the books from 2004 to 2009, a period that included multiple loan assignments between 2006 and 2009. His longest and most prominent tenure occurred at Leicester City, where he served as goalkeeper between 2011 and 2022. He later joined Celtic Glasgow, which became his final club before injuries forced his retirement. Across his international career, Schmeichel made 120 appearances for the senior Denmark national team.
