Promoted Schalke held defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich to a 0-0 draw at the Veltins-Arena on Saturday, ending Bayern's 67-matchday run at the top of the table.

Defending Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich dropped points on matchday two of the domestic season, playing to a 0-0 draw against newly promoted FC Schalke 04 on Saturday. The result at a sold-out Veltins-Arena halted Bayern's streak of 67 consecutive matchdays atop the Bundesliga standings and marked the first time the club failed to score in a league fixture since February 2025. Bayern manager Vincent Kompany adjusted his starting eleven ahead of Thursday's Champions League opener against FK Bodø/Glimt, resting Harry Kane and Michael Olise on the bench while starting Lennart Karl, Ismael Saibari, and Nathaniel Brown. Bayern's active supporters stayed away from the stadium following confrontations with Schalke fans before kickoff.
Karius leads defensive resistance
Schalke entered their first Bundesliga home match in more than three years having lost 12 consecutive matches against Bayern over nine years, without a victory against the Munich side since 2011. Under manager Miron Muslić, the home side defended deep in a five-man backline anchored by Nikola Katic. Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius, named player of the match, stopped an early effort from Karl in the third minute and deflected an attempt by Brown for a corner in the 13th minute.

Kompany introduced Kane at the start of the second half, followed by Olise and Jamal Musiala in the 57th minute. Bayern's clearest opening came in the 54th minute when Luis Diaz lifted a chipped finish over Karius, but the ball was cleared off the line before crossing. Karius later preserved the clean sheet by palming an 87th-minute long-range strike from Kane over the crossbar.

Statistical imbalance
Bayern held 83% of ball possession throughout the 90 minutes, recording 15 shots to Schalke's four and earning 11 corner kicks without conceding any. Schalke finished the match with an expected goals value of 0.21, approximately ten times lower than Bayern's tally. Neuer reception and Musiala comeback
Bayern captain Manuel Neuer started in goal in what is likely his final match in Gelsenkirchen before his expected retirement at the end of the season. The 40-year-old goalkeeper was greeted with whistles and chants from home supporters throughout the match. Schalke tested Neuer sparingly, with his most notable intervention coming in the 36th minute when he punched clear a free kick from Adil Aouchiche.
A win would have been nice, but some of my family will be happy about the result and so it's okay as it is. I enjoyed myself.
Jamal Musiala played 33 minutes off the bench without physical complaints, marking his competitive return after suffering two collapses during pre-season linked to a neurological condition. Following the draw, Bayern drop out of the top three, trailing Freiburg, Borussia Dortmund, and SV Elversberg in the table after two rounds.
