AfD leads CDU in Saxony-Anhalt polling ahead of televised Magdeburg debate

Party leaders in Saxony-Anhalt prepare to face each other on Wednesday evening at 20:15 in the state capital of Magdeburg. The broadcast airs on Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk within its regular television program format "Fakt ist!". The studio encounter begins with a direct head-to-head duel between incumbent Minister-President Sven Schulze of the Christian Democratic Union and Ulrich Siegmund, the lead candidate for the Alternative for Germany. Following this opening two-way exchange, the moderation team expands the panel to include candidates from five other political parties running in the state election. Representatives from the Left Party, the Social Democratic Party, the Greens, the Free Democratic Party, and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance will join the broader stage. The broadcast takes place approximately one and a half weeks before the electorate votes.

Polling margins and legislative goals

Saxony-Anhalt is set to hold its state parliamentary election on Sunday of next week. In current opinion polls, the AfD leads the field with support measured around 41%, maintaining a wide margin over the governing CDU at roughly 24%. The AfD has stated that its explicit objective is to govern alone without forming a coalition. If it secures an absolute majority, the party has announced plans to implement an offensive deportation policy and terminate the interstate broadcasting treaties governing public media. Its legislative platform also includes establishing a baby welcoming grant and enacting a ban on rainbow flags at public schools. Whether the AfD can achieve a single-party government depends on how many competing parties clear the minimum threshold to enter the Landtag and how those results influence the final distribution of seats.

Self-criticism at the Magdeburg forum

Ahead of the election, leading political figures attended a panel discussion organized by the newspaper taz in Magdeburg under the motto "Wetten dass... die Demokratie gewinnt?!". Several lead candidates used the forum to identify past political errors in how established democratic parties handled the AfD. Armin Willingmann, the lead candidate for the SPD, addressed what he described as long-term shortcomings in confronting the party's foundational positions.

In fact, in the early phase of the AfD, we paid far too little attention to dealing very intensively with this racist ideology, which was like that from the beginning and has become more and more acute.

Willingmann argued that competitors did too little to explain that the AfD had no genuine policy agenda, describing its strategy as based solely on exclusion, division, and attempts to play societal groups against each other. Minister-President Sven Schulze acknowledged similar tactical misjudgments on the part of the CDU during the discussion.

Schulze stated that political actors previously chose not to address certain policy topics out of concern that bringing them up would benefit the AfD. He added that his party had communicated far too little directly with the public during that time.
