Sara Carbonero shares Instagram photograph displaying abdominal surgical scars
Spanish journalist Sara Carbonero published a photograph showing her abdominal scars from past surgeries, reflecting on personal resilience following repeated health challenges.
Social media post and visual message
Spanish journalist and television presenter Sara Carbonero published a photograph on Instagram on 27 August 2026, displaying surgical scars across her abdomen. Taken along the coastline of Cádiz at sunset, the image shows Carbonero in an olive-toned halter top and matching trousers, positioning her face outside the frame to focus on her torso. The image makes visible two distinct surgical scars: a vertical incision extending from below her chest to her navel, and a horizontal mark across her lower abdomen. Carbonero accompanied the photograph with the hashtags "verano 2026", "Cai", and "mi estrella", alongside a brief written reflection on overcoming adversity.
What a relief when we stop being only what happened to us.
Medical history and hospital admissions
The visible marks correspond to multiple surgical interventions Carbonero underwent over the past seven years. In May 2019, while residing in Porto with her former partner Iker Casillas, doctors diagnosed Carbonero with a malignant ovarian tumor, leading to surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. She underwent subsequent surgical procedures in Madrid in 2021 and 2022. In January 2026, Carbonero experienced another medical issue during a trip to La Graciosa with partner Jota Cabrera and friend Isabel Jiménez. She was admitted to a hospital in Lanzarote for severe abdominal pain and remained hospitalized for 11 days following surgery, an incident unrelated to cancer.

Reflections on scars and personal grief
Carbonero has spoken on several prior occasions about living with physical marks from surgery. On her 38th birthday on 3 February 2022, she posted an image displaying a scar running to below her navel, reflecting that her body serves as a map of her life journey.
I look in the mirror and like what I see while embracing imperfection. My body is another way to remember the path. Time and its seams. I have no problem continuing to collect marks that tell stories with happy endings.
In 2024, she shared an image referring to her scars as wounds that smile on the skin. The post also follows family grief for Carbonero, whose mother, Goyi Arévalo, died in Madrid on 12 April 2026 after an extended battle with cancer.
Community response and summer travels
The Instagram post received supportive messages from colleagues, public figures, and followers. Personalities including Paz Vega, Marisa Jara, Paloma Cuevas, and Raquel Perera shared supportive notes, with Perera expressing admiration for Carbonero. Singer-songwriter Marwan commended Carbonero for moving past painful events.
When one manages to accept that what happened does not have to define their identity, everything changes at an unimaginable level. Congratulations on that.
Carbonero spent the summer with her sons Martín and Lucas, visiting family in Corral de Almaguer, holidaying in Cádiz and the Canary Islands, and traveling to Colombia and the Galápagos Islands.
