Partner arrested after 27-year-old woman killed in Santander flat; case investigated as 33rd gender violence death of 2026
A 39-year-old man called police and confessed to killing his partner, 27, at noon on 31 July in a central Santander apartment. The Ministry of Equality is treating the case as a suspected gender-based murder, which would bring Spain's 2026 toll to 33 women and leave the couple's young child orphaned.
The killing on Calle Perines
Police received a call requesting their presence at a flat on Calle Perines, in Santander's San Fernando district, at 12:30 on Friday 31 July. Officers found a 27-year-old woman inside with bleeding wounds, likely inflicted by a bladed weapon. Emergency medical services were summoned but could only confirm her death. Her partner, a 39-year-old man, was at the scene.
The suspect phoned the police himself and admitted to the killing, according to a police statement. No prior complaints of gender violence had been filed against him by the victim. The two shared a home and had a minor child together, of very young age.
Arrest and investigation
Officers detained the man at the apartment and moved him to the Santander National Police station. The force activated its gender violence protocol, and specialist investigators are now gathering evidence to clarify the exact circumstances of the homicide. The Government Delegation in Cantabria forwarded the information gathered so far to the Ministry of Equality.
Several patrols, along with officers from the Citizens' Security Brigade, Judicial Police and Scientific Police, were deployed to the building. Neighbours watched from the street as officers guarded the entrance. One woman fainted at the doorway and was comforted by residents of the same stairwell.
National count and orphaned minors
The Ministry of Equality is compiling data on the Santander case as a suspected machista crime. If confirmed, it would become the 33rd gender violence murder in Spain this year and the 1,374th since official records began in 2003. The latest count before Friday stood at 32 women killed in 2026.

Community and political response
The Government Delegation announced a condemnation rally for Saturday 1 August at 10:00 in Santander's Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The government delegate in Cantabria, Pedro Casares, mayor Gema Igual, and the regional minister for Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality, Begoña Gómez del Río, are scheduled to attend.
No broader official statements were immediately released beyond the Delegation's social-media post confirming that data was being collected. The investigation remains open, and the suspect is in police custody pending judicial proceedings.
