Hannover 96 secured a 2-1 victory over VfL Bochum in the 2. Bundesliga on Sunday, one day before newly appointed head coach Sandro Wagner officially takes charge. Under interim manager Lars Barlemann, who stepped up from the club's under-23 squad for a single match, the team collected their second victory of the league campaign. The result moved Hannover to seven points after six matches heading into the upcoming international break. Barlemann took over following the dismissal of Christian Titz, who was released after five matchdays when the squad sat on four points. On Monday, Barlemann will formally hand over responsibilities to Wagner, who is scheduled to be officially introduced and lead his first training session.

The victory ended a home winless run for Hannover, whose previous home league triumph occurred on 20 March 2026 in a 1-0 win against Eintracht Braunschweig. Goalkeeper Leo Weinkauf protected the lead during the first half with multiple saves in only the fifth second-tier appearance of his career. Hannover opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Stefan Teitur Thordarson converted following a loose ball from a corner kick. Marcel Hartel doubled the lead in the 43rd minute with a low right-footed strike into the bottom corner. Bochum applied sustained pressure in the second half and pulled a goal back in the 77th minute through Tom Meyer, but Hannover held on to hand the visitors their first away loss of the season.

Front-office decision on Wagner

Wagner's appointment was confirmed on Saturday evening after supervisory board chairman Martin Kind approved the agreement negotiated by sporting director Jonas Boldt. The 38-year-old former German international previously led SpVgg Unterhaching to 3. Liga promotion in 2023, served as assistant coach to Julian Nagelsmann with the national team, and recently managed FC Augsburg for 12 matches. Boldt led the search following growing dissatisfaction with Titz's rigid approach and the team falling behind competitors such as Hertha BSC and 1. FC Nürnberg. Boldt noted that Wagner's detailed preparation during discussions proved decisive.

“Sandro Wagner is certainly a personality known in German football. What convinced us extremely was that he had engaged intensively with Hannover 96, our squad and the season so far, and was exceptionally well prepared in the talks. He is a person who works meticulously and burns for the task.”

Strategic goals and league outlook

Wagner, whose contract is reported to run through 2028, was not present in the stadium on Sunday and inherits a team level on seven points with Bochum and FC St. Pauli. Following the three-week international break, his task will be to reorganize Hannover's defensive transitions and push the club back into contention for Bundesliga promotion. Hannover's back line showed vulnerability after turnovers against Bochum, presenting an immediate tactical area for the incoming coaching staff to address. Wagner expressed his commitment to the project upon taking the role.
