Salesforce to acquire Irish-founded AI customer service company Fin, formerly Intercom, for $3.6 billion

The CRM giant picks up the Irish-founded AI customer agent company, rebranded last month from Intercom, to add fast-deploy agents to its Agentforce platform.

The deal

Salesforce announced on Monday that it signed a definitive agreement to acquire Fin, the AI customer service company previously known as Intercom, for approximately $3.6 billion (€3.11 billion). The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Salesforce's fiscal 2027, which falls in the first few months of calendar 2027, subject to customary regulatory clearances. Salesforce said the deal will not alter its fiscal 2027 financial guidance or its capital return program.

This is a major win for consumers of the world.

Fin's technology and reach

Fin offers an AI agent that handles customer queries end-to-end across live chat, email, WhatsApp, SMS, phone and Slack, resolving an average of 76 per cent of support volume without human intervention, according to Salesforce. The agent runs on Fin's proprietary model, Apex, which the company says it post-trained specifically for support tasks and claims outperforms frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Fin brings more than 30,000 business customers with the acquisition.

Strategic rationale

Salesforce's own AI agent platform, Agentforce, reached $1.2 billion in annual recurring revenue in the first quarter, up 205 per cent year over year. The company said it is buying Fin for speed rather than to fill a gap. Agentforce serves as the deeply customisable, enterprise-grade option, while Fin provides a packaged, pre-trained agent that can go live in days, suited to mid-market and smaller firms wanting a working support agent immediately. The combination lets Salesforce sell both a drop-in support bot and a bespoke enterprise build.

Fin brings proven agent technology, a deep commitment to customer success, and an incredible AI team that will complement Agentforce with powerful service agent capabilities.

Leadership comments

Fin co-founder and CEO Eoghan McCabe said the company's technology had defined the customer-agent category and that joining Salesforce would let it deploy at scale far faster than on its own. McCabe, along with R&D head Des Traynor, will remain in their roles. The firm rebranded from Intercom to Fin in May 2026, taking the name of its AI agent. The sale ranks among the largest ever for an Irish-founded technology company.

Outlook

The purchase combines Fin's self-contained, autonomous agent with Salesforce's broad enterprise platform, and adds Apex, a model that the company says was built for support resolution, to Salesforce's AI portfolio. The deal is subject to price adjustments and standard closing conditions, with no disruption to Salesforce's financial plans.
