Iași opens Saint Parascheva pilgrimage as 300,000 worshippers prepare to visit
Church officials in Iași have moved the relics of Saint Parascheva and Saint Paisios into the cathedral courtyard, opening a week of services expected to draw 300,000 pilgrims across Romania between 8 and 15 October.
Relics unveiled in outdoor ceremony
The annual pilgrimage to the relics of Saint Parascheva begins on 8 October at the Metropolitan Cathedral in Iași, drawing thousands of believers during the early morning hours. In a departure from previous years, clergy conducted the opening religious service outdoors in front of the cathedral rather than inside the building. Priests moved the reliquary containing the relics of Saint Parascheva into the cathedral courtyard, placing it beneath an open-air canopy. Alongside the patron saint of Moldavia, pilgrims will venerate the relics of Saint Paisios of Sihăstria, which arrived from Neamț county on the evening of 7 October. Both reliquaries will remain available for public veneration in the courtyard until 15 October.
Floral arrangements and ceremonial calendar
The canopy sheltering both reliquaries was prepared with oak leaves, fir branches, scented lilies, chrysanthemums, and roses. Florist Ion Buștei, whose family from Bucharest has decorated the courtyard baldachin for 23 years, incorporated autumn foliage alongside specific rose blooms.
We have several types of chrysanthemums, autumn varieties, several types of roses, we also have roses that open like a little heart, and there are several varieties of scented lilies. We also have various leaves to complement them. We use quercus, beautifully colored oak leaves. This year the dominant colors are autumn colors, but we also brought very cheerful colors to create a good and beautiful state for the pilgrims.
The schedule of religious observances includes the Calea Sfinților procession through the city on Sunday, 11 October, starting at 19:00. The principal service of the pilgrimage, the Divine Liturgy, will take place at 09:00 on 14 October on a temporary stage set along the Ștefan cel Mare pedestrian walkway.
- Relics of Saint Paisios arrive at the Metropolitan Cathedral from Sihăstria Monastery.
- Akathist service begins before the reliquaries move to the courtyard canopy.
- The Calea Sfinților procession begins through the streets of Iași.
- Divine Liturgy commences on the outdoor platform on Ștefan cel Mare boulevard.
- Public veneration concludes and the relics return inside the cathedral.
Crowd estimates and transport arrangements
Regional officials estimate that approximately 300,000 pilgrims will travel to Iași during the week-long event, aided by favorable weather conditions. More than 10,000 worshippers joined the line outside the cathedral on Thursday morning, with initial wait times reaching three to four hours. The heaviest concentration of visitors is expected on 13 and 14 October, when queue lines will stretch across several kilometers of city streets. A group of approximately 8,000 believers from Voluntari in Ilfov county will travel to the city aboard 160 buses. Local police arranged dedicated parking spaces for these coaches along an adjacent boulevard to prevent gridlock.
Security measures and designated queue corridors
To manage the influx of worshippers, security authorities established a secured pedestrian corridor beginning at the Metropolitan Cathedral. The designated access route leads through Arhitect G.M. Cantacuzino, Iordache Lozonschi, Cloșca, Petru Movilă, Uzinei, Morilor, Alexandru Ipsilanti Vodă, Sfântul Andrei, Iancu Bacalu, and Bulevardul Regele Ferdinand I. Municipal officials retain the option to extend the route onto Bulevardul Regele Mihai I if queue lengths expand further. Residents and business employees located along the path must carry identification documents or workplace badges to access their homes and offices. Patrols from the Alexandru cel Bun Mobile Gendarmerie Unit from Bacău and the Iași gendarmerie will monitor the route around the clock alongside volunteers and municipal police.
