Ukraine warns Russia is stockpiling captured drones for false-flag attacks on NATO

Ukrainian advisor's warning

Serhij Beskrestnow, a military technology advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky known by the call sign Flash, published photographs on August 2 taken by a Ukrainian interceptor drone. The images, he said, show a new type of Russian drone that closely resembles Ukrainian long-range unmanned aerial vehicles. The Ukrainian military portal Militarny published an analysis concluding that the Russian drones mimic Ukrainian designs, indicating Moscow is preparing false-flag operations. Flash confirmed the assessment, stating that Russia is systematically collecting Ukrainian drones that survived attacks, repairing them, and readying them for future provocations.

He added that it would be naive to expect Russia to use its own drones for deliberate provocations. "Does anyone really think the mysterious drones over Europe were (and will be) Supercams and Orlans with stars on their wings?" Flash wrote. "It is very important that the world community understands all this. This is what modern hybrid warfare looks like."

Polish defense minister sounded alarm in July

The warnings from Kyiv echo an alert issued by Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz on July 21. After a meeting of the security committee at the Prime Minister's Office, he said that Russia had seized Ukrainian drones and could use them as a provocative tool against Poland and other NATO eastern flank states, including the Baltic countries and Finland. Kosiniak-Kamysz noted that Poland had already experienced drone-related provocations and that public warnings were part of deterrence. The committee discussed the risk of hybrid warfare escalation, including "the use of Ukrainian aircraft, secured or seized by the Russian Federation."

The Moldova drone incident

As a possible precedent, Militarny pointed to an incident on June 8, 2026, when a drone crossed into Moldovan airspace during a massive Russian attack on Ukraine and exploded near the village of Lopatna in Orhei district. At the time, it was unclear whether the aircraft entered Moldova due to a navigation error, electronic warfare interference, Russian manipulation, or the deliberate use of a captured drone. The portal suggested that such operations under a foreign flag may already be underway.

What the photos show

The photographs published by Flash were taken by a Ukrainian interceptor drone. According to Militarny, the silhouette, straight-wing proportions, fuselage shape, and tail assembly of the Russian drone match the characteristic features of Ukrainian FP-1/2 series drones. The analysis suggests Russian forces could have obtained such drones after they were forced to land due to electronic warfare suppression or crashed because of technical malfunctions. Partially intact airframes could then be restored, reprogrammed, or used to build copies.

Heightened alert on NATO's eastern flank

The reports surface at a time of increased vigilance along NATO's eastern border. A recent incident in which a Russian missile entered Polish airspace and fell in the Lublin region has brought border security back into sharp focus. The scenario outlined by both Ukrainian and Polish officials involves drones bearing Ukrainian military markings appearing over NATO territory, which Russia could then present as a Ukrainian attack or use as a pretext for further propaganda pressure. No confirmation has yet emerged that such an operation has been executed, but the warnings from Kyiv and Warsaw reflect the heightened risk.
