Russian strikes hit Kyiv maternity hospital and regional hubs across Ukraine
Russian drones and missiles hit Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Izyum, and Odesa, damaging a maternity clinic, halting urban rail lines, and killing at least three people.
Russian strikes across Kyiv
Russian forces launched coordinated aerial attacks against Kyiv in late September 2026, deploying waves of drones followed by missile strikes. On the morning of 23 September, drone strikes hit multiple neighbourhoods across the capital, killing two people and injuring 25 others, with 17 individuals requiring hospital treatment. The following night, missile debris struck the Podilskyi district, damaging the facade and windows of a maternity hospital as well as a nearby clinical diagnostic centre. While no patients or staff inside the medical facility suffered injuries, one person was killed in the adjacent parking lot, bringing the immediate toll in that incident to two dead and three injured.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the extent of the damage to the medical infrastructure in the capital.
In a maternity hospital in the Podilskyi district, near which rocket fragments fell, the windows and part of the facade were damaged. No injuries were reported at the medical facility, but one person died in the nearby parking lot. A nearby clinical diagnostic center also suffered damage.
Infrastructure damage and port casualty
The drone strikes forced municipal authorities to suspend Kyiv's urban railway service on the morning of 23 September. Falling debris and direct hits sparked fires across several urban districts, including Solomianskyi, where wreckage fell between residential apartment buildings and onto the grounds of a transport enterprise. In the Holosiivskyi district, drones struck a storage warehouse and two fuel stations, leaving the facilities destroyed. In southern Ukraine, a Russian attack hit a commercial cargo vessel docked in the port of Odesa. Regional governor Oleg Kiper confirmed that the cargo ship operated under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda, and that the strike resulted in the death of its captain, a Ukrainian national.

Repeated shopping centre hits in Zaporizhzhia and bomb strikes on Izyum
Regional centres in eastern and southeastern Ukraine sustained repeated bombardments alongside the capital. In Zaporizhzhia, Russian strikes struck the Amstor shopping centre in the Pivdennyi district on the evening of 22 September, igniting a roof fire and injuring two men. Regional military head Mykhailo Semikin confirmed the injuries after initial reports showed no casualties. The facility, which housed a playground and a Jysk store, was the second Amstor mall hit in the city in five days, following a 17 September strike that triggered a 10,000-square-metre fire and injured one person. In northeastern Ukraine, Russian aviation targeted the city of Izyum between 21:30 and 21:50, dropping eight guided aerial bombs across the Verkhny Selishche and Iomz districts. The bombardment damaged private homes, cut electrical grids, and injured seven residents, including an 11-year-old child treated for acute stress.

Scale of aerial munitions and cross-border exchanges
The widespread bombardments were part of extensive aerial operations across multiple Ukrainian regions. Ukrainian authorities recorded 161 Russian drones deployed in raids across the country on 23 September, following an offensive on 21 September involving 172 drones that injured eight people across Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Simultaneously, Russian military authorities reported substantial Ukrainian drone activity over Russian territory. The Russian Ministry of Defence announced that its air defence units had intercepted and destroyed 514 Ukrainian aircraft-type drones directed at targets within the Russian Federation during overnight operations.
