Russian Projectile Hits Moldova Border Crossing at Palanca, Injuring Officer
A projectile ricocheted into a bus and border post at the Palanca-Maiaki-Udobnoe crossing on 5 October 2026, injuring a Moldovan officer and halting border traffic.
Strike at Palanca checkpoint
At approximately 09:38 local time on Monday, 5 October 2026, a Russian projectile struck the Palanca-Maiaki-Udobnoe border crossing connecting Moldova and Ukraine. The munition hit the ground near the border barrier and ricocheted directly into a stationary scheduled passenger bus and an adjacent border control booth. A Moldovan Border Police officer on duty sustained minor injuries, and authorities confirmed that no other casualties occurred at the scene. Moldovan officials immediately suspended border control operations at the Palanca-Maiaki-Udobnoe terminal and halted road traffic at the intersection of routes R-30 and R-31 in the Ștefan Vodă district to conduct on-site investigations. Patrol officers redirected commercial and passenger vehicles heading into Ukraine toward the Tudora checkpoint. The Moldovan Border Police and the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine urged travelers to avoid the area and take shelter indoors if drone activity or explosions occur.
Diplomatic reactions and airspace violations
The cross-border impact prompted formal diplomatic responses in Chișinău, where Romanian Ambassador Cristian-Leon Țurcanu condemned the strike on the border installation.
We firmly condemn the serious incident that occurred today in the Palanca area, in which one person was injured, in the context of the Russian Federation's attacks against Ukraine. This follows multiple drone incidents recorded in recent days that affected the airspace and security of the Republic of Moldova.
The Moldovan government summoned the Russian ambassador twice during the preceding week following multiple violations of sovereign airspace. Moldovan Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi stated that an earlier attack on 3 October 2026 involved three missiles and two drones whose fragments fell across four Moldovan districts. Nosatîi confirmed that the episode represented a sixth unauthorized violation of Moldovan airspace linked to strikes on Ukraine. Following these incursions, Chișinău appealed to international partners for urgent assistance to secure the country's airspace against drone and missile overflights.
Pattern of cross-border infrastructure strikes
Russian strikes have repeatedly targeted transit links between Ukraine and neighboring countries in recent weeks.
- Drone strike on the Starokazache crossing kills two Ukrainian border officers and injures a Moldovan driver
- Night strike hits a fuel station near the Yagodyn crossing on the border with Poland
- Drone attack damages a railway locomotive in Ukraine's Volyn region
- Debris from three missiles and two drones falls across four Moldovan districts
- Projectile hits the Palanca-Maiaki-Udobnoe crossing, injuring a Moldovan border officer
Moscow has justified strikes against border crossings by claiming the facilities are used to transport Western military equipment to Ukrainian forces, an assertion Chișinău denies. Russian bombardments have completely destroyed three border crossings along the Moldovan frontier. In response to the damage, the Ukrainian government proposed joint management of border facilities located entirely on the Moldovan side, though Chișinău has not formally accepted the arrangement. Previous strikes included a 6 September 2026 drone attack on the Starokazache crossing that killed two Ukrainian border officers and injured a Moldovan driver, as well as a 13 September strike on a filling station near the Yagodyn crossing on the Polish border and a 15 September drone strike on railway equipment in Volyn.
