Russia strikes Kyiv with ballistic missiles overnight, five killed across Ukraine

Russian forces launched ballistic missiles and 106 drones at Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities overnight on August 15-16, killing five people and wounding 33 across four regions, while debris from downed drones sparked fires in the capital.

Overnight assault on Kyiv

Russian forces attacked Kyiv with ballistic missiles for the second time in a week on the night of Saturday to Sunday, August 15-16. Missiles struck central Kyiv and the Pechersk, Obolon, and Holosiivskyi districts shortly before 3 AM local time. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported on Telegram that debris from downed Russian drones caused three fires across the city. In the Obolon district, two non-residential buildings caught fire and several parked cars burned. A large fire also broke out at the Petrivka market. The Kyiv City Military Administration reported at least five explosions and three people injured. Klitschko had earlier urged residents to take shelter and remain there until the air raid alert was lifted. On Sunday morning, sounds of Russian drones could be heard in Kyiv as air defense systems operated. An air raid alarm remained active in the capital, with the threat of further drone attacks.

Casualties across Ukrainian regions

Beyond Kyiv, Russian forces struck Kremenchuk in the Poltava region and Kamianske and Kryvyi Rih in the Dnipropetrovsk region with ballistic missiles and drones. In Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russian forces attacked industrial objects with ballistic missiles and drones, killing one person and wounding between 13 and 14 people, depending on the source. Regional authorities reported five killed and 33 wounded across the Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Kherson regions. Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia regional administration, said Russian forces dropped aerial bombs on residential buildings in the Zaporizhzhia district, killing two people and wounding one man. Vadym Filashkin, head of the Donetsk regional military administration, reported one person killed and six wounded over the past 24 hours. Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson regional administration, said one person was killed and nine wounded.

Air defense response

Ukraine's air forces reported that Russia attacked with various missile types and 106 drones. Air defense shot down 85 drones and three Kh-59/69 guided air missiles, with air-strike impacts recorded in 13 locations. The scale of the drone warfare was mirrored on the Russian side: Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said air defense in the Moscow region shot down over 50 Ukrainian drones, though he provided no information on possible damage or casualties.

Depleted interceptor stockpiles

According to reporting cited by Kyiv Independent, Russia is exploiting Ukraine's depleted stocks of Patriot missile interceptors, the primary weapon capable of shooting down ballistic missiles. The United States drew down a portion of its own reserves to defend American and allied bases in the Middle East during the conflict with Iran, while European NATO countries have not replenished their stocks after transferring interceptors to Ukraine. Ballistic missiles, including types imported from North Korea, are now causing the greatest damage in Ukrainian cities. On August 5, a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv and its suburbs killed 17 people. On August 11, an attack on Zaporizhzhia killed seven and wounded 24.
